Geo Trail Project Update:

The Geo Trail, a pedestrian trail located just east of the Oregon Tech Campus, is now under construction and needs your help.  The goal of this project is to provide an easily-accessible, all-weather trail in the vicinity of the Oregon Tech and Sky Lakes campuses.

The first phase, which is currently under construction is only about 1 mile in length.  However, the trail is laid out to facilitate expanding the trail system to the north, south, or east as opportunities arise with Oregon Tech, Sky Lakes, or adjacent landowners.  We have already been contacted by one landowner who is working with us to expand the trail to the east!
The project is a collaboration between KTA, Oregon Tech, and Sky Lakes Medical Center with $83,000 of funding from a Recreational Trails Program Grant and in-kind donations by Diversified Construction and the Rhine-Cross Group.  Sky Lakes is providing construction management and has donated matching funds to the project.  KTA is providing volunteers for construction and semi-annual maintenance.

What Has Happened So Far?
As of now, the majority of the contractor’s site work is complete.  Diversified Construction has graded the trail and parking lot and placed the gravel surfacing.

What Is Next And How Can I Help?
Volunteers are an important part of this project.  In the coming months, the contractor will pave the parking lot and compact the trail surface.  However, we need volunteers to install trail amenities and meet the matching requirements of the grant.  Here are some of the items where you can help:
  • Raking the cut and fill slopes (Work day on August 13th, please join us)
  • Seeding (winter and spring)
  • Constructing and installing benches (a key feature of this trail!)
  • Constructing and installing a trailhead kiosk
  • Placing rocks for access control
  • Installing trail signage

Volunteer’s Needed for Crater Lake Century Bike Ride - Aug. 20th

The Crater Lake Century is right around the corner and we need a few more volunteers to help put on this amazing event… dubbed by Bicycle Magazine “ The Best Ride in Oregon”. The Crater Lake Century is a benefit ride with proceeds going to KTA (for the first time), the Food Bank and the Klamath County Museum.  Please consider helping.

Event Day Volunteer Positions Needed for Aug. 20th:

  • Parking (2) – directs parking in an orderly manner.  Shift 5:45-8:00 am.
  • Start & Finish Crew (8) - parcels riders out in groups of no more than 15, checks off bib numbers and gives a short safety talk.  The finish crew welcomes riders home and tracks bib numbers so there is an accurate count of riders still on the course.  Shifts 6-9 am, 9-12 pm, 12-4 pm.
  • Sag Stops (20) - join us at one of our four rest stops, setting up tables, preparing and serving food and drinks.  Shifts range from 3-5 hours starting at 7 am and ending at 4 pm.
  • Clean-Up (3) – help tear down tables, garbage pick-up.  Shift 5-7:30 pm.

Please call Zach at 541-331-5247 or email him at zach@hutchsbicycles.com if you can help.
