We would like to welcome our incoming PGY-1 residents Yusef Ahmed, Hamad Almuhannadi, Muhannad Alnahdi, Jessica Cao, Jacqueline Slomovic, Bryan Wong and Manlong Xu this year.

We are also excited about having the following new fellows joining our department this year:

PGY-2s are now in our Ophthalmology clinics

A big welcome to our new PGY-2s, Minawaer Abudu, Waleed Alsarhani, Sonia Anchouche, Anna Kabanovski, Jenny Ma and Prem Nichani, who just started in our ophthalmology clinics!

Tina Felfeli, our PGY-2 resident, has joined the Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) at the University of Toronto in pursuit of a PhD degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research through the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. During her full-time graduate studies, she will be engaged in taking courses and conducting research along with several other residents from various medical and surgical specialties within PGME who are also a part of the CIP program.   Her research interests include application of biomarkers and imaging technology in prediction models for retinal diseases. Her focus will also expand to the use of clinical databases to evaluate delivery of care within the field of ophthalmology. Following the successful defence of her thesis, Tina will be returning to full-time clinical duties for the remainder of her residency training.

DOVS Cornea Group News

In April, the U of T cornea fellows and staff attended the annual meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in Washington, DC. There was stellar representation starting off with former fellows, Dr. Tanya Trinh (Australia) and Dr. Nir Sorkin (Israel) being invited speakers at Cornea Day. Dr. Clara Chan was an invited speaker at the Sunday General Session's Lindstrom Symposium. Dr. Yishay Weill (fellow) was awarded the 2021 Obstbaum Award given to the author of the best original article published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery that year. Dr. Larissa Gouvea (fellow) and former fellow, Dr. Ruth Lapid (Netherlands) won best paper in their respective sessions. Lastly, 4 cornea courses organized by Dr. Sara AlShaker (fellow), Dr. Shai Gendler (fellow), Dr. Nizar Din (fellow), and  Dr. Larissa Gouvea (fellow) were chosen for the meeting program and included presentations from Drs. Clara Chan, David Rootman, Allan Slomovic, Neera Singal, and Josh Teichman as well as former fellows, Dr. Eyal Cohen (Israel) and Dr. Michael Mimouni (Israel) and current fellows. Additional alumni joined our reunion dinner: Dr. Randall Ulate (Costa Rica) and Dr. Arie Marcovich (Israel) which we hope will become an annual tradition.

TORIC 2022

The 2022 Toronto Ophthalmology Residents Introductory Course (TORIC) wrapped up successfully last month with all PGY1 residents from Canada and Jamaica in attendance!  While navigating the challenges of the pandemic era, the students benefited tremendously from the academic and social benefits that the TORIC course provides our future ophthalmologists!  The course directors Dr. Amandeep Rai, Dr. Kathy Cao, Dr. Amrit Rai, and Dr. David Yan would like to thank all of the faculty (both UofT and visiting) for the continued support of the TORIC program!  The dedication and commitment that our instructors have to the education of our future colleagues is vital to the success of this course!

Amber Needham - The Blind Girl Sees

A few years ago, Dr. Clara Chan performed a limbal stem cell transplant with combined living and deceased donor tissue for her patient, Amber Needham. Amber had lost her vision after a severe drug reaction due to Stevens Johnson Syndrome. She has since written a book, “The Blind Girl Sees,” about how to maintain a positive life outlook as a visually impaired person. This July and August, she will be riding a tandem bike with her husband across Ontario as a fundraiser. More details of her life experience and links to purchase her book (with proceeds going towards stem cell research) are available here:

Consulting Opportunities

Consultant Position for The Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC)

The Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC) is looking to work with a consultant to support us in our assessment of requests for exam accommodations relating to eyesight issues. PEBC provides testing and certification for individuals seeking registration as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician in Canada. PEBC certification is a requirement of licensure by all provinces in Canada, except Quebec. PEBC offers two types of exams: computer-based multiple choice exams and performance-based exams where candidates complete simulations with a standardized patient in a series of stations. Candidates are able to request exam accommodations when temporary or permanent functional limitations caused by a disability, medical issue or other circumstances prevent them from taking the exam under standard conditions. I am PEBC’s Examination Administration Coordinator responsible for managing all requests for exam accommodations.

PEBC often receives assessments from candidates in support of their requests, and requires experts to help interpret them and make recommendations for exam accommodations to give candidates fair and equal access to our exams, without providing an advantage. PEBC hopes to work with a consultant who, after becoming familiar with the unique nature of PEBC’s high-stakes exams, can provide support in our review of requests and granting of exam accommodations. PEBC currently works with a Psychologist Consultant on a range of psychological/psychiatric issues, and wishes to engage an expert in
ophthalmology/eyesight issues.
