Women building better communities

January 2020 Communique

From the President:
We are halfway through the league year and members have been incredibly busy. We have supported HelpOurKids not only with fleece blankets completed in October but we also filled backpacks with school supplies at our holiday party to help support the children that go into foster care over the holidays. Other community events included an ice cream and movie night at Ronald McDonald house, painted dorms at Springfield Friends of the Homeless and helped sort food at the Western Mass Food Bank.

We also held a successful small fundraiser in South Hadley at Board and Brush in November and are looking forward to Purse Bingo, our large fundraising event on February 29th, which will support this year’s scholarship award winner. Please see our Finance section below for more information on how you can attend and/or support the event.

The second half of our league year is already looking to be just as busy as the first half with our fundraisers, additional community events and our new member class officially kicking off. With so much to look forward to, I wanted to thank everyone for their continued support and involvement!

Best,
Andrea Leonard
President

Membership Updates:
Our members are amazing! 2020 promises more excitement with new info sessions and activities to be announced.  One of our more recent community outreach activities included engaging with prospective new members and fellow nonprofits at the OnBoard event at the Hall of Fame.  What a great event!

New Member Training continues, with Prospective New Members brainstorming their New Member Project this month. We cannot wait to share what they come up with! A friendly reminder that we are conducting rolling admissions this League Year, there is still time for interested members to join us!

Keep an eye on your email and our Facebook Page for upcoming Info Session & Member Social events coming up.  And, as always, please share our social media pages and ask that interested members reach out to jlgs.membership@gmail.com.

Communications Update:
We are working hard to promote the Junior League of Greater Springfield on social media and in the community! Members of the board attended the OnBoard event at the Basketball Hall of Fame to network with other local non-profits and meet with prospective members.

We are focusing now on promoting the Designer Purse Bingo! Please share the event with friends, family members and co-workers. Invite them on Facebook, share the posts and grab flyers at the GMM to hand out. We are also looking for donations for raffles! Please reach out to potential donors!

Thanks!
Jess McArdle
VP of Communication

Finance Update:
Happy New Year! The finance team is very excited for the new year and a new fundraiser!

We had a very successful fundraiser in November at Board & Brush in South Hadley! Not only did we all leave with beautiful handmade wooden signs but we raised $544 in the process! Thank you to everyone who was able to join us.

Next up is our Designer Purse Bingo which will be held at Mt. Carmel in Enfield, CT on Saturday, February 29th. Tickets are on sale for $35 and all purchases of tables of 8 will receive extra bingo cards. If you are interested in supporting our scholarship fund, join us for a night of bingo, raffles and friends! Contact jlgs.finance@gmail.com for tickets or Tracy (VP of Finance) at 860-716-3038

Community Update:
We continued our momentum with a robust calendar of community events this past holiday season by taking on some new projects and visiting with familiar community partners. Over the month of December we took on a new project with our community partner Help Our Kids to sponsor backpacks for foster children in need. As you may recall, last year we provided the same organization with 100 duffel bags filled with toiletries and other necessities. This year, it came to our attention that unfortunately, the holiday season tends to be a peak time for children entering foster care. To that end, we asked how we could be of most assistance to these children in need. As it turns out, children going into foster care do not have school supplies to bring with them as they enter a new school system once they are taken from their homes- since this was a critical need we focused on how we could help these children segue into a new school at a time when they need support the most. We hit the ground running over the winter by purchasing supplies to stock 72 backpacks for the children, and prepped the backpacks during our annual holiday party. Help Our Kids was eternally grateful for the support - we plan to complete this truly rewarding project again next year.

Keeping with the holiday spirit, we also spent an afternoon at the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts again this year where our members helped with food stocking and donation prep. As always we enjoy spending a day with this organization annually to support those families in Western Massachusetts who benefit from the food bank's services. Heading into the new year, the Community Council will once again be focused on our book drive, the bookshelf overhaul project, and our scholarship search. We are excited to get started as we head into 2020 and look forward to providing you all updates along the way!

Thanks!
Jess Moran
