THE FULL LID
BREAKING NEWS
13th April 2021

Editor's note: Are we excited we got to use a BREAKING NEWS format? You better believe it!

Best Fan Writer Finalist: Me!

I'm delighted to be Best Fan Writer finalist for the third year running. It’s an amazing field and the primary focus of my work these last few years in particular. Thanks especially to all the various venues -- SFX, the British Fantasy Society, The Companion, SciFi Bulletin and more -- for bringing you my words. Fan writing is the workshop and fan writers are the engineers that build the future, and I’m incredibly honoured to be numbered among them.

The Full Lid is a
Best Fanzine Finalist!

This year is extra special because The Full Lid -- this very newsletter you're reading now -- is a finalist in Best Fanzine! This nomination is incredibly special to me for two reasons. Firstly because The Lid has been going about four years now and I’m incredibly happy to see it receive this kind of recognition. And secondly because this is Marguerite's first Hugo nomination! Congratulations, my love!

Editor's note: EEEEEE!!

But that's not all...

Best Related Work Finalist: CoNZealand Fringe!

Here's where things get a little complex. Related Work is an incredibly broad category, used to recognize all the contributions to our communities and industry which might otherwise fall through the cracks.

Marguerite and I are on this short list because along with fellow finalists Claire Rousseau, Adri Joy, C, Cheryl Morgan, Cassie Hart we put together CoNZealand Fringe, the series of complementary genre fiction programming at European-friendly times that ran last summer.

This project was the definition of a scrappy underdog . We did it in almost no time, zero budget, and free for anyone to attend. All while many of us held down multiple simultaneous commitments, like attending / being panellists on / being Hugo finalists at CoNZealand.

It remains one of the toughest projects I've tackled with the most giving and relentless of teams. It has been hugely rewarding to see the Fringe concept embraced and built upon by virtual events worldwide, including fellow nominee FIYAHCON

And More Nominations for the Escape Artists!

Hey, ever wanted to see a spaceship race a dragon? Well this year you can! Both Escape Pod and PodCastle are Best Semiprozine finalists -- PodCastle for the very first time! We’re so proud of our amazing teams and it’s wonderful to see them both recognized on this stage.

Also if you don’t follow their Twitter accounts, this would be an excellent time to start. Their loving sibling rivalry the next few weeks promises to be unmissable.

And of course check out new episodes dropping every week both for them and for sister shows PseudoPod and Cast of Wonders. Which we also love -- no favorites here.

Mur Lafferty and S.B. Divya are
Best Short Form Editor Finalists!

WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF EXCLAMATION MARKS!

Finally, I'm so deeply proud to see the Escape Pod co-editors recognized for their tireless work and editorial excellence. The Editor categories are one of the several categories where change seems to come slowly. The industry is even now debating with itself about the role and recognition of editors. I’d argue the presence of Mur and Divya on this list indicated the debate is headed in the right direction. Fearless podcast editors who’ve steered Escape Pod through it’s fifteen anniversary (and its first print anthology!) proves they're genre fiction rockstars.
So! That’s the news! Congratulations to all the many amazing finalists. We'll see you back here on Friday at 5 pm for this week’s The Full Lid. Less red, more to read.

See you then!
