GREETINGS FROM BRAZIL!

Welcome to the very first edition of the Alex in Wanderland newsletter! I'm honored that you've allowed me in your inbox.

Tomorrow morning marks two weeks since I've arrived in Brazil. Say what?! It feels like it's been a million years since I left Thailand. In two weeks I've covered the big city of São Paulo, the wild festival of Tomorrowland Festival, and now the colonial seaside town of Paraty, from where I currently write you. São Paulo totally took me by surprise. I expected it to be a big, overwhelming and mostly charmless city. Wrong. I fell head over heels for it and felt so comfortable there I had to do a mental check-in and make sure that I hadn't somehow forgotten living there for a couple years or so at one point in my distant past. Nope, still my first time in Brazil! Tomorrowland was an indulgently fun four days, though it was hard not to compare the slightly (ha!) disorganized event to its more established Belgian cousin. Paraty has brought on a range of emotions. It's melt-your-heart adorable in literally every direction, but there's been a thick, unrelenting cloud cover since the night we arrived and we haven't seen a peek of sun nor sky in five days. The weather was gorgeous for our first week, so we are just crossing our fingers that this storm passes soon. I know you serious winter survivors are rolling your eyes right now, but it's a lot for this Vitamin D addict to take.

Behind the scenes, I admit that I'm struggling with a bit of homesickness -- not for address listed on my driver's license in New York, but rather for the island home that I just said goodbye to, Koh Tao. Who knew having a home base would be so hard to let go of -- again?

THIS WEEK'S BLOG POSTS

THIS WEEK ON FACEBOOK

Got my Brazilian visa! This was literally my most liked Facebook photo/post of all times -- iPhone selfie for the win?
A fun video of school lunches around the world. The accuracy, however, is being debated.
A sneak peek at Tomorrowland Brazil. Can't wait to cover this festival.
Leaving stuff behind in hotel rooms and on plane seats: It's the literal worst.
Getting high on the mat. A beautiful essay by one of my favorite yoga teachers -- and a fun photo of me upside down.
Sexism in the dive industry. Have you experienced it?
What should I do for my last week in Brazil? Y'all weigh in!

THIS WEEK ON INSTAGRAM

I both love and hate Instagram because I never know what to expect from it. The photos I barely post because I'm convinced they are awful become my most liked, while those that I confidently share, sure of their greatness, are among my least popular. Here are the three that garnered the most double taps since I arrived in Brazil!

I made it. I love this photo, and you guys did too.
A sunny entrance. One that I almost didn't post!
Sunset over the mainstage. Who doesn't love a sunset?

LAUGH OF THE WEEK

I was going to make this category "Mean Blog Comment Of The Week" -- and I've been getting a lot lately -- but then it kind of felt to mean. Is it snarky to snark your snarkers? I think it might be.

So I thought I'd look for alternative comic relief sources -- like the actual comics! Source.

Looking for new travel blogs to obsess over? Curious about new content? Searching for the perfect gift for the wanderluster in your life? Each month, I’m sharing an inspiring selection of travel blogs, travel projects and travel shops right here! Not only are these fellow entrepreneurs following their passions and creating beautiful content, they’re also supporting Alex in Wanderland by advertising in my sidebar this month — please support them back by checking out their sites and cheering them along.

Now let’s shine the spotlight on Alex in Wanderland’s featured bloggers for April!

Graphic designer Erica of Postcards from Wherever might go anywhere, but her blog focuses on lesser known European and Asian destinations, including several of the 'Stans.

Why I Love This Blog: Photography. Typography. Geography. is the tagline for Postcards From Wherever, and how could I not be obsessed with a blog with the word typography making up one third of its tagline? Her personally designed postcards from each of her destinations are a joy to browse through.

Rachel Elizabeth is an English-teaching, flying-phobic travel addict who was transformed by travel. Her blog Blond Wayfarer follows her travels in Europe, North America and beyond.

Why I Love This Blog: Rachel has just been accepted to the amazing BlogHouse program where she'll be mentored by some of my favorite fellow bloggers -- I can't wait to see what she learns!

Stephanie of My Quarter Life Epiphany is currently based in Mexico, though has also called Brazil, Thailand, and originally, the USA home. Her blog features travel tips, language learning progress, and destination inspiration -- and a beautiful site design!

Why I Love This Blog: I spent ages combing through this blog in preparation for my current Brazil trip, and I can't tell you how many posts I bookmarked! Her section on Expat Life in Rio is an invaluable resource.

Long time Alex in Wanderland readers might recognize Sky of Sky Vs. World from the comments section –and now I’m so excited to have her in the sidebar too! A small town Pennsylvanian with a love of all things Central America and a bravery for stepping outside her comfort zone, you’ll be cheering her along with every post.

Why I Love This Blog: Sky knows how to get real. Really real.

Natalie of Gad About the Globe hails from Idaho, but her travel history allows her to call many places home — she’s worked in Europe, studied in Asia and Latin America, worked for the Peace Corps in Madagascar and for Americorps in Los Angeles, and traveled extensively inbetween!

Why I Love This Blog: She had a similar saving-for-travel journey as I did, as outlined in her post How I Paid For Three Months in Europe.

Lucy of London -- and her namesake travel blog Wanderluce, of course -- is equally addicted to both beauty and travel. Looking for a blogger to tell you which blush to toss in your backpack? Luce is your girl.

Why I Love This Blog: Lucy and I have one very big 13-square mile travel obsession in common -- Koh Tao! We've both called the island home, a badge of honor that creates an immediate kinship.
