Pride Foundation August Newsletter 2019

Message from the Chair

This month, I’m proud to highlight some of the incredible work being done in one of our focus areas: LGBTIQ+ people living with disability.

I would like to congratulate the disability advisory group, and in particular our board member Ian Gould, for their leadership and commitment to LGBTIQ+ disability. This has been recognised by a high commendation at the Victorian Disability Awards earlier this month, which is excellent.

Myself and the board also give a special thanks to the people living with disability who have been so instrumental in helping us to understand the key issues and direct the focus of our work – Jake Lewis, Margherita Coppolino, Ki Hayward, Jax Jackie Brown and Cameron Bloomfield.

One of Pride Foundation Australia’s core principles is to engage with the communities at the focus of our philanthropy. By valuing lived experience and ongoing community consultation, philanthropy can be a powerful tool in creating long-lasting social change.

Ruth McNair, Pride Foundation Australia Board Chairperson

“During the awards process it struck me that what LGBTIQ+ and the PWD communities have been working for over many years, separately, and at last making achievements in wanting the same thing.
All we want is: To be who we are; To be equal; and ‘Nothing for us, without us’.”
Ian Gould

An Award Winning LGBTIQ+ Disability Initiative

Pride Foundation Australia were recognised for ‘Excellence in Creating Inclusive Communities’ at the 2019 Victorian Disability Awards this month.  Our LGBTIQ+ Disability Initiative, lead by board member Ian Gould, received a Highly Commended award.

The award was presented by the Victorian Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers, Hon Luke Donnellan. We send our thanks to the whole project team, and to David and VALID for nominating us.

Congratulations also to Nathan Despott, and all our good friends at Inclusion Melbourne Inc.
Their I Can Vote project, a world first inclusive voting campaign, was awarded a Highly Commended for ‘Excellence in promoting rights, fairness and safety'.
Inclusion Melbourne was the recipient of our very first grant for LGBTIQ+ disability, and we are delighted and proud of our continuing partnership.
