Pride Foundation News May-June 2019

Message from the Chair

It's been an exciting few months for Pride Foundation Australia! Deakin University has started their research project on the lived experiences of LGBTIQA+ people living with disability, we have brought on a new Marketing and Administration Officer, taken part in a social fundraising fellowship with Our Community, and kicked off our End of Financial Year fundraising efforts with a campaign to raise awareness and funds that will support our work with LGBTIQA+ refugees and asylum seekers living in Australia.

Board member Ian Gould and myself were able to meet with some of the LGBTIQA+ Disability research team at Deakin University, as well as representatives from State government and Inclusion Melbourne.

All of this has been made possible through the support of people like you, so thank you.

Ruth McNair, Pride Foundation Australia Board Chairperson

Save the date!

We’re excited to announce that on the evening of Thursday 10 October, Pride Foundation Australia will be holding a fundraising event in Sydney, with guest speakers Professor Kerryn Phelps, and our Patron Professor Dennis Altman.

We will be raising funds to support our new priority area, LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers living in Australia, as well as build up our networks in NSW.

More details will be posted on our facebook page and our website closer to the date.

Supporting LGBTIQA+ Refugees and Asylum Seekers

This year, Pride Foundation Australia identified LGBTIQA+ refugees and asylum seekers living in Australia as one of our areas of focus for 2019. We have been working alongside our LGBTIQA+ refugee and asylum seeker advisory group to identify the priority issues that would benefit from our funding, including grant rounds, commissioning research, and supporting collaboration.

In the lead up to the End of Financial Year, we are running a grassroots fundraising campaign to raise the funds we need to support this work in better understanding and addressing the needs of LGBTIQA+ refugees and asylum seekers living in Australia, as well as the needs of other vulnerable groups within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Connection and community have always been the greatest strength of LGBTIQA+ advocacy. That’s why we’re asking you to help us raise $30,000 to support this work, either by donating or by taking 5 minutes to create your own Crowd Raiser page that you can send to your friends and networks

Meet Ruby Mountford -
Our New Marketing and Administration Officer

Ruby (who uses they/them pronouns) joined the team in late April, and as their first bit of official business, worked with Ruth to successfully apply for a place in Our Community’s Social Fundraising Fellowship. Since then, they have been developing and implementing our end of financial year fundraiser, as well as learning the ins and outs of our organisation (and writing this newsletter!)

They hope to raise community awareness of Pride Foundation Australia and the work we do, and welcome any feedback, suggestions or input sent to

LGBTIQA+ Disability Research Project-
Pride Foundation Australia and Deakin University

After the success of our Disability Forum in February, and our work with Inclusion Melbourne last year, Pride Foundation Australia has continued our focus on LGBTIQA+ Disability and raised funds for a new project with Deakin University.

Ruth McNair and Ian Gould attended the first meeting to get updates on progress, plans, and met half of the research team, including one of our panel members from the Disability Forum, Jake Lewis. It’s great to see people with lived experience playing a vital role in this research, and we look forward to keeping you updated on the outcomes of this project.

Congratulations to Ruth!

Finally, we would like to congratulate our chairperson, Associate Professor Ruth McNair, for her AM on the Queen's Birthday 2019 Honours List!

Ruth was recognised for her contribution to medicine and her ongoing and tireless contribution to the LGBTIQA+ community. A full list of winners can be found here.
