Dear Campus Community,
Today we watched with shock and dismay the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol Building and on our democracy. An angry mob breached security barriers and wrought violence and terror. They threatened our nation’s leaders and others who work in the Capitol, and disrupted proceedings that historically pave the way for a peaceful transition of power.
And there was clearly a stark contrast in the response to this unprecedented siege as compared to the treatment of protesters who called for racial equity last summer. This disparity underscores once again that our work toward antiracism and racial justice are more important than ever.
Everything about this flies in the face of what we teach and hope to model at Colorado College. Civil discourse, peaceful civic engagement, antiracism, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving approached from many disciplines and perspectives are among the hallmarks of a CC liberal arts education. Our students prepare to be the leaders of tomorrow. With the crucial knowledge, values, and abilities they gain at CC, we hope they will steer toward innovative solutions and away from the destructive chaos and turmoil we saw today.
We know today’s events are traumatic and disturbing, and the continuing tension surrounding the situation is stressful. If you need support, please contact the Counseling Center, 719-389-6093 or counselingcenter@coloradocollege.edu; the Butler Center, (719) 389-6338 or butlercenter@coloradocollege.edu; the Chaplain’s Office, (719) 389-6638 or

Please take care of yourselves and one another.
Sincerely,
