Mind-Reading 2017: Mental Health and the Written Word

Studio Theatre, dlr LexIcon, Friday 10 March 2017

Join us for a seminar organised by UCD and the University of Oxford. It’s called ‘Mind-Reading: Mental Health and the Written Word’ and speakers include  Jim Lucey, author of the recent bestseller ‘In My room’ and expert on OCD and other anxiety disorders, Prof Sally Shuttleworth on child psychology and Prof. Fergus Shanahan on many of the productive links between literature and mental health. There are numerous workshops throughout the day on such topics as the use of poetry to illustrate the effects of mood disturbances; stress and overwork in the Victorian era; use of literature by clinicians and, from the library perspective, the role of bibliotherapy plus a new health literacy initiative entitled the HEAL Project, piloted in 2017 by the four public library authorities in association with health librarians. This seminar is open to the general public at a reduced rate of €20 and will also be attended by healthcare providers, clinicians, psychologists and GPs. Find out more at the link below.

Talk with author & poet David Butler

Saturday 11 February, 11am - 12pm
Blackrock Library, free, just drop in

The Blackrock Sequence is part of a public art commission during which David Butler will create a sequence of poems examining the history, culture and memory of the coastal area running from Booterstown to Dun Laoghaire, centering on Blackrock.
At this special free event, David will talk about his Blackrock Sequence project and present some of the work in progress, followed by a Q&A. David would welcome peoples’ memories of the area over a cup of tea and coffee. This will appeal to local groups and anyone with an interest in the local history and literature.
This project is managed by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Arts Office, with support from dlr Library Service.
