Summer Stars Family Day

The sun shone (and the wind blew!) for our Summer Family Day in dlr LexIcon last Saturday, 24 June.

We had great fun outdoors with The School of Irish Archaeology's Big Dig and Your Man's Puppet Variety Show. And there was lots to do indoors with Helen Barry's art workshops, LEGO free play and robotics workshops from Learn It, yoga with Yo Yo Yoga, storytelling with Steve Lally, and The Incredible Children's Circus Cabaret from Street Theatre Ireland.

The Tallest Lady and Marcel So What kept people entertained while Susie did great work painting faces all day!

Thanks to everyone for coming along and all who contributed to make the day such a huge success!

dlr LexIcon Children's Writing Club

The dlr LexIcon children's writing club read their group poem 'I am Dún Laoghaire' at our Family Day on Saturday June 24th in the dlr LexIcon Studio. The dlr Writer in Residence for 2016-2017, Sarah Webb, set up the writing group in September 2016 and the group has gone from strength to strength with Sarah's careful mentoring. A special thanks is also due to local poet Lucinda Jacob who came in to work with the group on poetry.

The Petal Project

The Petal Project
Did you know that Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County has the largest older population in the country, with 14.7% people over 65 in 2011 compared to 12% nationally? The County Council has been working with the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Age Friendly Alliance to implement the Age Friendly Strategy which aims to ensure that Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown is a great place to live in and grow old in, well into the future.

The Petal Project is a simple initiative designed to address a perceived inaccessibility to toilet facilities identified by older people as a barrier to going out and about in the County. The display of a small sticker with the Age Friendly Petal logo provides a discreet message to older people that clean and accessible toilet facilities are available without fuss.

Look out for the Petal logo which will be displayed on all community centres, libraries and amenities which have accessible toilet facilities. In addition, Petal window stickers will be made available to the Chamber of Commerce and Business Associations and are available from the County Council to any businesses wishing to participate.
