After a studio-wide contest for a title for our themed art show..

We Have a Winner!

Having taught for 15+ years, I have recognized how the artwork of colored pencil artists has become more sophisticated over time, which was never more evident than during the 2019 end-of-year Drawn Together Show.

I realize that BTS artists are pushing themselves out of their comfort zone with difficult reference material, varied surfaces, mixed media and intriguing concepts.  It’s so energizing to be in the studio every week with so many inventive ideas!

“Just imagine.”  That is the challenge for this year’s themed show in July at the Holmstad in Batavia.  We are stepping up our game here a bit, and I am asking BTS artists to take a reference photo with predictable colors, and turn them into something completely unusual and surprising.

Early this year current students suggested and then voted on a title for this show.   “A Different Point of Hue” is our winner, which suits our theme perfectly.

This is not a “coloring book” challenge.  You still must pay attention to values and details.  But use your imagination to convert those into something unanticipated.

Think through it. Play with it. Let your creativity have a hayday. Who’s going to tell you you’re wrong? This is YOUR interpretation, so let loose!  Can’t wait to see the entire collection of results from your wild imaginations!
