Irish Responsible Tourism News #9

2015 Irish Responsible Tourism Conference

The 2015 Irish Responsible Tourism Conference, our 2nd conference was held at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Dublin on the 11th March. With 19 speakers and 120 people in the room the event reinforced the growing interest in and awareness of responsible tourism. Powerpoint presentations for the event from each of the speakers are available on our website at www.icrt.ie/conferences under 'Irish Responsible Tourism Conference 2015'. Videos of each of the presentations are available on our YouTube channel under Irish Centre for Responsible Tourism. There will be a 3rd conference in 2016. We'd like to thank again our sponsors, Fáilte Ireland, without whom the conference would not have taken place this year.

2015 Irish Responsible Tourism Awards

The first all-Ireland responsible tourism awards took place after the conference. The awards attracted huge interest with 450 nominations from every county in Ireland! Again this shows the great and growing interest in this approach to tourism. Ireland has shown that it can compete on the world stage, with the expert judging panel blown away with the high standard of entries. Winners of two of the categories, Best Destination and Best Cultural Heritage Attraction, have been automatically shortlisted for the World Responsible Tourism Awards. The awards are a success which will be built upon, with planning underway for the 2016 Irish Responsible Tourism Awards. The list of Gold and Silver award winners can be found here. Read what international responsible tourism expert, chair of the judging panel for the world awards and of this years Irish awards judging panel, Professor Harold Goodwin had to say about the Irish awards here.

The corrolary of responsible tourism is irresponsible tourism and a facebook page has been established to raise awareness of issues and to highlight examples of poor practice, green-washing and just downright bad businesses and behaviour. See https://www.facebook.com/groups/irresponsibletourism/ for examples. Do you have any examples of greenwashing or bad practice in Ireland that you would like highlighted here?
