Members of East of the River perform at a Chanukah celebration in December 2013

East of the River will perform on Sunday, July 12 at 7:30pm in Mills Hall at this year's Festival.

In the spirit of the program's title, Levantera, East of the River explores Medieval music of the Mediterranean and travels eastward through the Balkans and Armenia and the Middle East, exploring the earliest songs of those extraordinary cultures, together with their traditional dances - the origins of which go back centuries. In this program, East of the River lends its innovative blend of sounds to a fascinating and beautiful repertory much of which is little known to today's audiences.

Ensemble members include Daphna Mor (recorders, ney), Nina Stern (recorders, chalumeau), Tamer Pinarbasi (kanun, a Turkish instrument), Shane Shanahan (percussion), and Jesse Kotansky (violin).

We look forward to welcoming the ensemble to the Madison Early Music Festival this summer! This year's Festival runs from July 11 - 18, 2015.
Faculty Profile: Jerry Hui

Jerry Hui, Director of Choral Activities at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, is a dedicated MEMF participant, section leader and conductor, and board member. Jerry recently wrote in support of the Madison Early Music Festival and how it has impacted his career as a musician and a teacher. In his own words...

"Over its fifteen years, MEMF has become a nurturing community that fosters new interest in early music, helps participants improve, and encourages them to continue practicing and learning beyond the summer week...The upcoming festival, 'Slavic Discoveries: Early Music from Eastern Europe', takes on a geographical region whose music is wonderful yet rarely heard. The concert series will sure to be a prime experience that will attract a wide audience from the area...Within the last ten years that I have participated in MEMF, I know there are many young musicians who have similarly found early music to be their calling."

Thanks to Jerry for his kind words and continuing support!
