Help Keep Flathead Lake Clean!
Invasive mussels on our doorstep
It is heartbreaking to learn that the terribly invasive and ecosystem altering zebra/quagga mussels have been detected in Montana.  Although invasive mussels within a couple hours drive of Flathead Lake makes our task to protect our waters bigger, if we increase our efforts and we are vigilant, it will be possible to prevent an introduction here. And, it is definitely worth the cost, as the damage to our waters, recreation, and our economy would be dire.

The Flathead Lakers are working with our Aquatic Invasive Species partners to determine steps needed to respond to this threat. We will need your support for new legislation in the upcoming legislative session and for additional funding to prevent these invaders from spreading to Flathead Lake.

What can you do?

-Talk to your legislators: support a new plan and funding for Flathead watershed protection.  Watch for more imformation from the Flathead Lakers and our partners.

-Join the Flathead Lakers' Aquatic Invasive Species advocacy group: contact Hilary Devlin at or 883-1341.

-Make a special end of the year donation to the Flathead Lakers.

-Join us for Science on Tap January 3 at Flathead Lake Brewing Co. for an expert panel discussion on invasive mussels.  Bring your questions!

-Participate in the volunteer dock and shoreline inspection day this spring.

-Remind your friends and guests to clean, drain and dry their boat every time they move it!

This is Why...
Our brewery believes that great beer calls for quality ingredients and quality ingredients require a healthy environment. Why is that? Well, beer is made from items found or grown in our environment: malts, hops, yeast, and the most important ingredient – water.  So, teaming up with organizations like the Flathead Lakers, who also desire to protect our environment has always been an important part of our company’s mission.

In the brewing industry, the water available to the brewery dictates what type of beer the brewer can make. Most breweries, to avoid constraints from hard or soft waters, must invest in filtration systems to reduce unwanted minerals and hardness, then add them back in to get a certain water profile.

Not us! We can produce unfiltered beer because we are fortunate enough to live and create a product in such a clean environment here in the Flathead Valley. We can brew with exceptionally clean and fresh water straight from a deep aquifer that is continually replenished by snow melt from surrounding mountain ranges.

Yet, we are not only involved in environmental causes just because of beer production.

Then why, you ask? Simple… because we are so lucky to call Montana our home. We get to enjoy all it has to offer us in terms of outdoor recreation every day. So, we believe we hold part of the responsibility to conserve its natural beauty and health for our enjoyment today and for future generations tomorrow.
