Are you an International Postdoc?
The current visa programs that allow Postdocs to work in the US are being threatened by the White House in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. UWPA is here to support you. Here’s what you need to know right now:
  • TN and J1 Research Scholar visa programs are not currently impacted.
  • H1B visa programs are currently impacted by presidential proclamations and amendments made in June. These proclamations do not impact anyone currently in the US who is on an H1B visa, or who is planning to switch to H1B visa status from another visa while they are already living within the US. However, this may impact you if you go back to your home country while applying for/accepting employment in the US. You can read more details along with clarification and guidance at this NAFSA resource page.
  • The National Postdoc Association (NPA) co-sponsored an info session on visa programs, and this information session can be viewed on YouTube here. This session was held prior to the H1B proclamation, but includes important information about the processes surrounding visa programs for international Postdocs.
  • The union of academic workers at the University of California, UAW 2865, held an info session on the H1B visa proclamation which can be viewed on Facebook here.
It’s very important to keep an eye out for any changes to visa programs that may impact you as a Postdoc working in the US. A good place to start is the UWPA Twitter account, and the Twitter account for our Postdoc Union, UAW 4121. The UWPA and the UW Office of Postdoc Affairs are also keeping a close watch on the situation and will reach out whenever a change occurs that will impact Postdocs.
