Habitat for Humanity of Orange County

The Presbytery of Los Ranchos has approved a grant of $10,000

Dear Tom Cramer, Friends, and Colleagues in the Presbytery of Los Ranchos:

Thank you for your recent gift of $10,000 to our Presbyterian Coalition designed to build five new homes in Santa Ana.

As most of us already know, Habitat for Humanity is one of the most successful and highly respected faith-based mission organizations in America.  But Habitat is much more than a charity, they coordinate donations of funds and volunteer labor and actually build low-cost new homes for deserving families who could not otherwise purchase one in today’s expensive real estate market, like here in SoCal.  Habitat is already supported by most of the churches in the Presbytery, but about a year ago several churches formed a coalition to pool our resources to try to make an even greater impact on this important local mission.
To date, coalition members include Grace 1st Presbyterian of Long Beach, Placentia Presbyterian, 1st Presbyterian of Orange, Garden Grove 1st Presbyterian, Yorba Linda Presbyterian, Tustin Presbyterian, Community Presbyterian of San Juan Capistrano, St. Mark Presbyterian of Newport Beach, and Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.
The Coalition has been meeting with the Faith-based representatives from both Habitat LA and Habitat OC and has established a project that we have decided to help sponsor.  It is called the McFaden 5 Project and is located in Santa Ana, CA.  McFaden 5 is a large, multi-unit build that will create five new homes.  Our Los Ranchos Coalition will be hosting the official Build-Day kick-off for this project on Saturday, September 24th and we are now soliciting volunteer workers from across the Presbytery to come and be a part of this important day.
And yes, there will be work also as we begin to actually put up the wall framing for these new homes.  If churches or individual folks are not able to work on the build site but would still like to contribute, the Coalition is also active in promoting mission giving in our individual churches.  Through donations from coalition members and a major grant from the Presbytery, we are already well on the way to our goal of raising $25,000 to help purchase building materials for the project.
If your church would like to learn more or become a Coalition partner, please email me the name and contact information of a person with whom we can work, and we hope you can join us at our next meeting on Thursday, September 8th at 7 PM at Tustin Presbyterian Church.  From Faith Partners to Coalition Partners, this is an opportunity for congregations and individuals in the Presbytery to work together to provide badly needed affordable housing in our communities.
Love and Peace,
Richard Birkemeier, Coalition Sec.
