Support the emergency response for those affected by Hurricane Matthew

Over the coming year, the Council, through its Presbytery Gathering Team, will be innovating new ways to share our ministry together as a presbytery. The first innovation comes on November 17 where we will be gathering around the Lord ’s Table as the crescendo of our time together. The day will build in energy and culminate in celebration led by Chineta Goodjoin and the New Hope worship team. Everyone will leave elevated in spirit.

Please notice the new schedule. Yes, you are reading correctly. The business meeting comes first, and grows from there to powerful stories of faith and celebration. Make sure you plan ahead so you don’t miss a moment of this special time together as God’s extended family.

This webinar will give a brief background on the ways lectio divina is currently taught, and then dive more deeply into the less-familiar classic form of the practice from the Middle Ages.

Whether you happen to be a medieval monk or a 21st century Presbyterian, this kind of prayerful wrestling with Scripture can be the foundation of a life of deep communion with God.  We will practice the steps together on one Advent text, and set out a plan to spend December using
lectio with other key Advent texts, either on your own or with a group. More

Does your church hold rummage sales or yard sales?  Do you have an annual alternative Christmas Market with sales proceeds going to mission?  If so, these are most likely taxable events and you must charge sales tax to be remitted to the State of California.

Pam Presnall
From Tom Cramer:

I attended Andrew Do’s town hall meeting on Saturday (October 15) with Pam Presnall (see photo), a friend and SCT member who knows more about homelessness than anyone I know. As the Director of Development and Community Education Mental Health Association of Orange County, Pam is connected to many of the leaders who care most about the under-resourced in our county.

Homelessness is a complex issue. It takes everyone working together to offer any hope of combatting it, and people often do more harm than good when they try to offer their services irrespective of all the other organizations and people involved. Everyone has a part to play from developers, social workers, mental health workers, faith communities, the medical community, and, as I’ve recently discovered, even veterinarians, as pets are a huge part of many homeless people’s lives.

Amgad Beblawi

From Ron Kernaghan:

For the last couple of weeks, I have been working with Tim McCalmont to put together some ideas for how our Presbytery might respond to the looming crisis of refugees from Syria and possibly Iraq.  I have agreed to spearhead the effort to put together a proposal which would be brought to the Presbytery for approval sometime early in 2017.
At the present time, I am in the process of gathering names of people interested in helping with the impending crisis, and I am looking particularly for people who would be willing to serve on a start up or coordinating team to formulate a proposal and oversee its eventual implementation.
I have been in touch with Amgad Beblawi (See photo of him above meeting with Syrian President Assad), formerly coordinator for the Middle East and Europe with the World Missions Division in Louisville.  Originally from Egypt, Amgad is bilingual in English and Arabic, and he has an incisive grasp of the way the Presbyterian Church in Syria is responding to the humanitarian crisis there.
He will be speaking at our Presbytery Gathering on November 17th, both at a pre-meeting Lunch Forum from 12:30-2 PM and during the business time at 4:40 PM.

Presbyterian Giving Catalog

The Presbyterian Giving Catalog is filled with gifts that exemplify the work prayerfully carried out by ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency. These ministries work in collaboration with Presbyterians, congregations, mid councils, and global partners. Every gift has the power to fulfill a need. To change a life. To foster hope and faith.

These stories of impact are intended to be shared with your congregation in celebration of, and gratitude for, the magnitude of God’s gracious and abundant work in the world. More
