Why GTINs Have Become Vital to Google Shopping

Article courtesy of

Many marketplaces and retailers rely on GTINs, so by setting them up, companies are making their products visible to all.

In 2015, Google began requiring Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) for products from a specific list of 50 brands. They are expanding this requirement – and beginning May 16, 2016 all products that already have been assigned a GTIN by the manufacturer must have the GTIN included for Google Shopping ads or risk being rejected by Google.

Inaugural GS1 Food Safety Forum 2016 - A Great Success!

Today’s global food supply chain has evolved into a complex and tangled maze. Besides the increasing difficulty to ascertain the products’ origin, ingredients and their attributes, it is also hard to ensure food safety along the supply chain from the farm through to food processing, retail and finally to the consumer.

This was the key takeaway for close to 80 participants who attended the GS1 Food Safety Forum 2016 held on 28 July at the SMF House. With the theme “Gaining Consumer Trust through Traceability in the Food Supply Chain”, this forum, which was organised by GS1 Singapore, aimed to provide a platform for food industry professionals to learn insights from industry experts on different facets of traceability and food safety.

GS1 Global Traceability Assessment for Singapore Food Companies

More than ever before, food companies face consumer pressure to deliver food that is safe to eat. Consumers expect unsafe food to be removed from store shelves immediately. Companies know that brand integrity and consumer confidence are directly related to food safety and the ability to track products up and down the supply chain.

Traceability is one of the key solutions to food safety and quality. GS1 has developed a tool known as GS1 Global Traceability Checklist-Control Points and Compliance Criteria for continuous improvement of traceability systems using global standards. This process-based tool helps to build compliance for mandatory traceability requirements within quality management systems and benchmarks them against global standards and other key traceability regulations.

Some of the major benefits:
  • Facilitate Global Traceability Standard adoption
  • Ensure the right implementation of full supply chain traceability
  • Ensure continuous conformance to the GS1 System and consistency with best practices related to supply chain efficiency
  • Have a technology independent solution for traceability
  • Offer a common global solution
More details about standards can be found here:

For a limited time only, we would like to invite your company to participate in a complimentary 'GS1 Global Traceability Conformance Gap Assessment'. (Terms & conditions apply.)
