Standards Support: The Pharma Industry’s Top Questions about EPCIS

March 11, 2016
Peter Sturtevant | GS1 US

Last year was an important milestone in supply chain security. The first of several Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) drug traceability requirements marked the beginning of the journey in healthcare for a safer, stronger and automated drug supply chain.
The 2015 DSCSA deadlines were “Phase 1” of a three-phase implementation timeline, focused on sharing transaction information, history, and statements initially at the lot or batch level. DSCSA has already brought about significant business process changes and the pharmaceutical industry is working to also address the next two phases—item marking for serialization in 2017, and final phase of serialized item level traceability requirements in 2023.

To take action prior to these next deadlines, the pharmaceutical industry is collaborating on the use of the global GS1 and ISO standard called the Electronic Product Code Information Service (EPCIS) to help meet both the immediate and long term requirements of DSCSA.

Learning about Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
Articles courtesy of:
What is EDI?
EDI is the abbreviation for Electronic Data Interchange. As its name infers, EDI is the process by which data is exchanged between businesses in a standard electronic format. Think of it as one company’s computer system “talking” to another company’s computer system and sharing information.

For over 30 years, EDI has been helping enterprises take paper and human involvement out of business document processing with the goal of:
1. Reducing bottom-line costs
2. Increasing data accuracy
3. Accelerating business cycles
4. Strengthening business relationship
5. Enhancing document security

Barcode Symbol Verification Services (1D/2D)

When a barcode symbol fails to scan, it leads to what we call a ‘scanning failure’. It is crucial to solve these ‘scanning failures’ at the early stages of the printing process, before a product is launched into the market.

Verification is therefore an important quality control tool as it helps to ensure correctness of the number, physical attributes of the barcode symbol.

What benefits will you have?
  • Save Time & Money: Avoid redesigning, reprinting or recalling your products
  • Better relationship with customers: Manage retailers’ frustrations by ensuring that your barcodes do not fail to scan
  • Trusted Service: Barcodes will be tested using the ISO-15416 & ISO-15415 approved verification methods
