GS1 Singapore Market Surveillance

GS1 Singapore has been conducting periodic market surveillance exercises. During such exercises, the GS1 surveillance team will verify products printed with GS1 barcode numbers to be valid, especially with the prefixes (“888”) issued by the Singapore office.

In a recent incident, a food manufacturer was found to be using an unauthorised barcode. Their subscription had expired but the company had continued to abuse the rights to continue using the GS1 barcode. Immediate investigation and action was taken. The food manufacturer was notified and instructed to remove their products off the shelves and discontinue selling their products to their retailers with immediate effect. They have since rejoined GS1 Singapore and paid up in full to continue using the GS1 barcode on their products.

In our ongoing efforts to uphold the GS1 system integrity which will contribute to the success of product or item traceability and GS1 Singapore members’ rights protection, GS1 Singapore will not hesitate to carry out necessary action against delinquent companies, including taking legal actions and informing key retailers that the company is no longer a valid GS1 Registered User. In doing so, GS1 Singapore also aims to protect consumers in Singapore.

The GS1 barcodes as specified by GS1 Standards are critical in helping businesses enhance their operational efficiencies and in ensuring supply chain visibility, including track and trace of products throughout the entire value chain, may it be from suppliers to brand owners to logistics service providers to distribution agents to retailers and to consumers. The ability to track and trace products helps properly identify legitimate products from “Farm to Fork” and if the need arises, helps remove defective or counterfeit products off the market more rapidly, and contributing towards overall customer satisfaction and protection.

Discover the Business Case for Central Kitchens

Date: 1 - 3 September 2015
Location: Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre

As Asian governments strengthen their food safety laws and implement new regulations to tackle the repercussions of lax regulations and porous transnational borders, stakeholders need to understand the implications to their business, and in turn, safeguard business continuity against food fraud, scams and adulteration.

With profit margins for F&B retailers and businesses shrinking due to high rental and capital-intensive equipment, stakeholders are considering investments in centralised production units to streamline their workflow. Is there a business case for central kitchens? How can stakeholders leverage this to stay ahead of competition?

Food Safety Asia 2015 and Central Kitchen Asia 2015 are designed to address these specific business challenges and provide practical strategies or solutions for business sustainability. Expect to hear first-hand experience and practical insights from a holistic portfolio of 50+ speakers, and network with 250+ of your industry peers.
