GS1 eCom is now called GS1 EDI
GS1 has announced the adoption of the name “GS1 EDI” for its GS1 global standards for electronic business messaging, previously called GS1 eCom.
The name change is required to avoid confusion with the phrase “eCommerce” which is now very broadly used on the Web to mean business-to-consumer commerce.
The name "GS1 EDI" was selected because it is already widely adopted in the GS1 community, including on their websites. It is a well-known term used by industry with a precise and broadly accepted meaning. It is easy to remember and pronounce; and works in most languages.
In order to ensure a smooth marketplace transition, GS1 will keep making reference to the previous name through 2016: we will say "GS1 EDI (GS1 eCom)" in order to allow industry get familiar with our new term during the transition period.
GS1 EDI is comprised of two sets of complementary standards whose names will remain unchanged: GS1 EANCOM® and GS1 XML.
