Remote camera loans scheme operational in Great Lakes

In September 2015 Karuah Great Lakes Landcare, Great Lakes Council and Local Land Services delivered a remote sensing wildlife camera workshop at Bulahdelah.  

This workshop escalated into others being delivered across the Hunter such as the 'Who's living on my land camera trapping' workshop series, and a notable increase in the interest in using cameras to monitor wildlife and pests.

One of the initiatives from the workshop at Bulahdelah was to make remote sensing cameras accessible to the wider community. Subsequently Great Lakes Council is now offereing a remote camera loans scheme.

Call for Abstracts for the National Landcare Conference

Landcare Australia is seeking presentations for the upcoming National Landcare Conference from those involved in the Landcare movement including farmers, volunteers, Landcare groups, and natural resource management organisations, in addition to primary industry representatives, environmentalists and conservationists, academics and researchers.

If you feel you have something valuable to share with the Landcare community, which demonstrates a unique and beneficial approach to natural resource management and sustainable agriculture, please submit your presentation idea by visiting www.landcareonline.com.au/nationalconference2016 .

The closing date for abstract submissions has been extended to 10 June 2016.

The National Landcare Conference and Awards, which is being held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre between 21-23 September 2016, will this year focus on the conference theme ‘Collaborative Communities – Landcare in Action’.

Blue Star Sustainability Awards 2016  

The Blue Star Sustainability Awards are Keep NSW Beautiful's sustainability awards program. 

Being truly 'sustainable' means addressing the entire spectrum of environmental, social and economic factors. So the awards recognise civic pride, community spirit and future planning in establishing the best projects and programs to come out of NSW communities.

There are nine different award categories, each with a regional and a metropolitan winner.
  1. Hey Tosser! Litter Action Award –Litter reduction and awareness
  2. Waste Less, Recycle More Award –Waste and recycling solutions
  3. Going Green Education Award – Environmental education programs
  4. Habitat & Wildlife Guardianship Award – Conservation, preservation of natural life and land
  5. Sustainable Systems Award – Sustainable solutions and strategies throughout communities; energy, transport, utilities
  6. Cultural Heritage Award –Built and social heritage conservation
  7. Environmental Achievement Award – Individual/group environmental volunteer work
  8. Young Environmental Achievement Award – Young individual/group environmental volunteer work
  9. Community Environmental Achievement Award -Environmental projects that have fostered volunteer community action
Initial applications close 31st May, however entrants will have till 30th June to complete submission details.

The Tucker Patch   

The Tucker Patch is run by the Gloucester Food Hub Ltd, which aims to create a self-sustaining community. The Hub draws its strength from being a community-developed economic growth model with a focus on food production that:
  • demonstrates the conversion of under utilised land into valuable agricultural land;
  • provides local jobs;
  • offers support for existing local farmers;
  • encourages start-ups of entrepreneurial food producers;
  • helps stop the drain of young local workers to the cities;
  • offers opportunities to tree-changers escaping from those cities;
  • provides income-generating opportunities for rural residents of any age;
  • allows a connection point between rural food producers and urban dwellers to access nutritious fresh food with low food miles.
The Tucker Patch has been growing fresh chemical-free produce in Gloucester for more than eight years. With regular farm gate sales and informative workshops that have been a welcome presence to many people in the community during that time.

The Tucker Patch  are working hard to become self-sufficient and are on their way! The Tucker Patch is raising funds to build up sales capacity to enable them to be self-sustaining.

Mine rehab conference a success!   

The conference, now in its fifth year, was held over two days with presentations, panel sessions and posters on the first day and two bus trips to three mines to see first-hand the rehabilitation underway on the second day. Some 280 delegates were treated to the latest information in mined land rehabilitation by 17 speakers from industry, government, and research organisations, including international speakers. There were two enthralling panel sessions, 20 poster presentations and a supporting trade display.  

Complementing these presentations was the historic launch of the first National Standards for the Practice of Ecological Restoration in Australia, prepared by the Society for Ecological Restoration Australasia, by the Chair of SERA Prof Kingsley Dixon. It was heartening to hear that these standards have recently been endorsed internationally (go to www.seraustralasia.com to learn more).

The importance of consideration of soil microbial health during all phases of mining from planning to rehabilitation was a major theme of the day with excellent presentations from research student Kate Newman, the Australian Organics Recycling Association, and Andrew Claridge whose outline of the fundamentally important triumvirate of woody plants, their truffle-like fungi and the fungus-feeding mammals was a revelation to us all.

The question “Can rehabilitated mine land sustainably support productive and profitable livestock grazing” was answered in the affirmative by Neil Griffiths from Primary Industries who showed data on steers grazing trials. The mine tour to Hunter Valley Operations the following day allowed some 24 delegates to see the steers first hand and compare with the control animals.
