Applications are now open for the 2017 Hunter Regional Landcare Scholarship

Hunter Local Land Services is encouraging postgraduate students with a strong commitment to natural resource management and agriculture to apply for the 2017 Hunter Regional Landcare Scholarship.

The scholarship exists to support students in conducting valuable research that aligns with the National Landcare Programme Objectives. This year we are also building stronger relationships between scholarship applicants and Local Land Services staff, who have suggested research topics this year.

It is a key goal of Hunter Local Land Services’ Strategic Plan to address knowledge gaps across the region through research that informs new and improved approaches to natural resource management and agriculture.

This is the fourth year Hunter Local Land Services has offered the scholarship, which is part of the Regional Landcare Facilitator program, an initiative of the Australian Government.

The scholarship is administered by The Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment, Faculty of Science and Information Technology at the University of Newcastle.

“This is a tremendous scholarship program which can make a significant contribution to a student’s research project and the environment,” said Director of The Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment, Professor Tim Roberts.

“The Tom Farrell Institute is proud to be administering this worthwhile scholarship program which helps students achieve their goals,” Professor Roberts said.

The scholarship, worth $3000, is open to students enrolled in post graduate studies at an Australian university. Applications close on Friday 27 January 2017.

Interested students can download the scholarship guidelines and application form from the Hunter Local Land Services website.

$14.9 million Farming Together Initiative

Farming Together is a federal government initiative, worth $14.9 m, which aims to build financial and societal sustainability across Australia’s smaller primary producers.

All farmers who register through the initiative receive a free one-on-one consultation to discuss their opportunities and create a successful collaborative group. This could be either as a structured co-operative, as a collective bargaining entity or as a less-formal collaborative group.

The most-promising groups will be offered assistance for product research and development. Areas covered include advice on marketing, capital-raising, packaging, logistics and exporting as well as non-ongoing consultancy appointments.

Farming Together comprises a highly experienced senior team drawn from a wide range of commodity groups from across Australia and backed by an industry advisory group representing experts from WA, NT, Queensland, Victoria, SA and NSW.

To register go to www.farmingtogether.com.au and complete the simple self-assessment – no extensive forms to fill in.

For more information phone Nick or Andrew on 1800 00 55 55 or email info@farmingtogether.com.au.

Australian native bees

There's been an ever increasing interest in Australian native bees in recent years. However, there is still a lot to learn about the many different species of Australian native bees.

Dani Lloyd-Prichard has been a busy bee for some 18 months producing a comprehensive and beautiful ag-guide for the Department of Primary Industries about Australian native bees.

Survey of the month: Farmers for Climate Action

Farmers for Climate Action launched a survey about farmers’ level of concern about damage to our climate, how they are responding to impacts, like changing rainfall patterns and more extreme weather, and views on solutions such as renewable energy.

Farmers who do the survey go in the running to win a Beam Energy & Flex solar system and battery solar storage from Enphase worth $15,000.

Farmers for Climate Action are asking primary producers to complete the survey and share it with others that might be interested. The survey can be accessed at: http://surveymonkey.net/r/farmers_survey.
