Thanks for a great year of Landcaring

During 2016, landcare in the Hunter region changed significantly.

Locally we have had seven new Local Landcare Coordinators (LLC) start up across the region. LLCs are now based at Shortland, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Johns River, Nabiac, Upper Lansdowne and Wingham, funded by Local Land Services as a partnership with Landcare NSW and regional landcare networks.

Hunter Local Land Services started District Landcare Partnerships during 2015/16 across Manning Great Lakes, Upper Hunter and Lower Hunter to the value of more than $100,000 across all districts. These partnerships are now rolling into their second year.

As Regional Landcare Facilitator, my work continues to:
  • recruit and support Local Landcare Coordinators to get on their feet
  • support landcare groups to access resources
  • boost the start up of Hunter Intrepid Landcare
  • support Hunter Farm Forestry Network
  • roll out three scholarships each year
  • develop the Matching enterprise to property guide
  • and get landcarers to important events such as the National Landcare Conference in Melbourne, where Lake Macquarie Landcare took out the 2016 award for Australian Government Partnership.
Naturally we owe a big thanks to the funding provided from the National Landcare Programme to support landcare in the Hunter region and across Australia.

2016 has been a great year for landcare in the Hunter. Similar activities are planned for 2017, and there will be more exciting landcare things to come.

Thanks again to all the great landcare efforts out there, enjoy your festive season and new year.

Useful resource for new Hunter landholders

There has been much conversation for years on how to support new landholders in the Hunter region. What is the best way to support new farmers? What are the best practices for small farms? And how do we build landholder awareness during an ongoing cycle of changing property ownership? These are the questions Local Land Services has been seeking to answer.

Each enterprise and property has its unique challenges. To address some of these, community members, state government staff and real estate agents have been engaged to help develop a resource called Making the right choices for your land: a guide for new landholders, and it is available from the Local Land Services website.
The guide is a simple document that shares information resources that can assist in answering challenging landholder questions. While the guide targets new landholders, it can also help existing property owners. Feel free to share this information, especially with anyone you know who is thinking of moving to the Hunter region.

Landcare NSW Insurance

Landcare NSW has a new insurance program. Landcare NSW has developed a new insurance product for its members, which has been tailored to the needs of 'care' groups in NSW.

This gives you and your group peace of mind that your landcare activities are appropriately covered.
