RCPCH Sponsorship by Formula Milk Manufacturers
For me, nothing evokes as visceral a response as a baby crying from hunger. As a proudly formula-fed baby of the generation "bottle is best" , not to mention the first of my siblings and close friends to become a mother- I remember the immense trepidation I felt when the time came to breastfeed my eldest. The first few days were difficult - but the Mancunian midwife refused to give up on the scrappy baby and her bewildered junior paediatrician mother. Every day for two weeks (weekends included), either the midwife, the lactation specialist or the midwifery assistant visited our hospital accommodation on the boundary of Boggart Hole Clough. And when I returned to full-time work when my daughter was 4 weeks old (let's not discuss the vagaries of the Home Office at this time!) the breastfeeding Room with special fridge and comfy chair ensured that my daughter managed to get breastmilk for much longer than I ever imagined.
As you receive today's newsletter, those of you who are members of the RCPCH would also have received your invitation to vote in the Formula Milk consultation. whilst we wait for the post carrying our voting codes to catch up with email, I invite you to read our lead blog outlining one position on this topic. Let us think carefully of the role of the RCPCH in promoting child health and where its association with Formula milk manufacturers fits within the college's professed ethos.
I also challenge you to spread the word far and wide. Possibly, we should also reflect on why such a pivotal consultation is being carried out in the height of summer; with closing date early in September.
