Morningstar Learning Center Pre-K Newsletter

           March 2016                                                           17th edition

Your Monthly Guide to Educational, Recreational, and Community Resources in the Big Sky Area

Brought to you by Morningstar Learning Center as part of the Basecamp to Kindergarten Program.  This newsletter is designed to support early childhood education and to help all Big Sky families stay on top of local happenings and resources for their little learners.

This month's theme is St. Patrick's Day!

 Book of the Month

Natasha Wing puts an Irish twist on a Christmas classic. It's the night before St. Patrick's Day, and Tim and Maureen are wide awake setting traps to catch a leprechaun! When they wake the next morning to the sound of their dad playing the bagpipes and the smell of their mom cooking green eggs, they're shocked to find that they've actually caught a leprechaun. But will they be able to find his pot of gold?

Make Your Gold Coin Dig

  • Shaving cream
  • 3-4 drops green food coloring
  • green glitter
  • Gold coins
  • Clear dish
  • Spoon
  • Paper towels (just to have handy)

Fill a clear dish (we used a big glass bowl) about 3/4 of the way with shaving cream, and add 3-4 drops of green food coloring. Shake in some glitter, and stir!  Stir in the gold coins (we got ours from the dollar store). I added some more glitter to the top. Then set it out for a sensory coin dig!

This number line scavenger hunt activity took only minutes to throw together and while we used shamrocks for a St.Patrick’s Day theme you could do this any time of year with any theme your child likes.  If they are still learning number order write the numbers on the tape and have them match the numbers, if 20 is too much try with 5 , 10 or 15. This is such an easy activity to adjust to your child’s ability and to repeat over and over. This would be a fun group activity as well, have each child search for one number and place it on the line.

Gather your materials. You will need something to write numbers on like foam shamrocks, shapes, or post it notes. You will also need some painter’s tape and a marker.

Start by writing your numbers on the shapes.

Next lay out the tape and write the first and the last number, for us that was 1 and 20. Make dots of write the numbers in between.

Hide the numbers all around your house!

Invite your little mathematician to search for the numbers and place them on the line. Give them a hand if needed but also give them time to figure it out on their own best they can before you step in.

Marbles and green food coloring! Simple as that. Easily turns ordinary cupcakes into shamrocks. The kid’s will love them. Bonus: After eating, they will avoid being pinched with all of that green food coloring around their mouth!
