SKYWARD SOLAR POWER
MIT developed solar cells as light as a bubble
Researchers at the MIT have developed a very thin, lightweight and flexible solar cell which is 400 times more efficient.
Energy Roadmaps for 139 countries Although the development of the ultra-light solar cell - which can float in a soap bubble - is still in its initial phase, the manufacturing process is promising according to the researchers.
The team used a common flexible polymer called parylene as both the substrate and the overcoating, and an organic material called DBP als the primary light-absorbing layer. Parylene is a commercially available plastic coating used to protect implanted biomedical devices and printed circuit boards from the environmental damage.
Unlike conventional solar-cell manufacturing, the entire process takes place in a vacuum chamber at room temperature and without the use of any solvents nor chemical harshes.
"It could be so light that you don't even know it's there on your shirt or on your notebook," professor Bulovic says. "These cells could simply be an add-on to existing structures."
The US Rocky Mountains Institute listed ten reasons why solar power is going to break trough. BetterWorldSolutions is pointing out seven of them.
Solar cell manufacturers are developing continuously
Worldwide still lots of opportunities for growth
Solar cells are robust and reliable
Solar cells are cheaper than fossil fuels
Solar panels are becoming cheaper and cheaper
Coal plants are closing
New business models
From the Rocky Mountains Institute: ‘(…) We feel the solar industry does not face a cloudy future. Far from it. Policies, regulations, and the stock market can’t stop the continued growth of this clean, affordable, reliable technology; the future of solar PV is bright. (…)’ Read more

SOLAR POWER UP TO 12% WORLD ENERGY BY 2050
CSP OUTLOOK 2016
This report, the fourth in a series on electricity from Solar Power since 2003, shows that solar power could supply in 12 percent of the energy needs of the world in 2050.
Moreover, the report shows how Solar Power could create millions of jobs world wide.
The report calculates various future scenario's for technological growth. Thanks to the favorable conditions for Thermal Solar Power, together with strong growth in energy efficiency, the scenario's show that in 2030, as many as 2.7 million people could be working in the Sun Power sector. Read more
