World's renewable power capacity 2014

China leads the world in renewable power capacity, with the US some way behing in second place. Germany comes next, but only if hydroelectric power is excluded from the calculation. If Hydro is included, then Brazil takes the third spot.

Per capita
Things look very different when capacity is measured on a per capita basis, with the top 5 countries all in Europe: Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Spain and Portugal!

LOW CARBON ECONOMIES OF SCALE

Big oil companies: its time for a change

In this time of exciting headlines, the big oil companies don't typically grab the most positive attention. The influence of the Big 6 is enormous. From blocking new technologies to spending millions in lobbies that influence politicians in denying climate change. But ... one thing has changed.

Technology is moving the low carbon sector beyond its current dependence on subsidies and public policy and into a new world of direct and genuine competition.
The advances of solar are just one example of that process in action. There are several others.

Stop the block of renewables, start boosting low carbon tech
The energy market is global and the oil and gas majors like ExxonMobil, Shell, BP, Total, Conoco and Chevron have the international reach to deploy very quickly whatever technology breaks through. The economies of scale could be tremendous.

Come on guys: I would expect you Big Ones, to create subsidiaries and spin offs and to use the huge cash mountains you have built up, to buy yourselves into the low carbon and storage companies and boost your image!

And Shell: please stop your mission to the Arctic. Remember the Exxon Valdez in 1989!

Big oil companies block efforts to fight climate change

Big Oil companies such as ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Total S.A., Chevron Corporation and ConocoPhillips are amongst the largest corporations associated with the energy lobby.

In 2004, oil and gas companies contributed over $25 million to political campaigns, donating 80% of that money to US Republicans. In the 2000 elections, over $34 million was contributed, with 78% of that money going to Republicans. Electric utilities also heavily favor Republicans; their contributions have recently ranged between $15–20 million. From 2003-2006, the energy lobby contributed $58.3 million to US state-level campaigns.
