Summer Arts Prize - Winners Announced!

Inside a packed (and hot!) gallery this Wednesday night, we announced the runners-up and winner of our 2016 Summer Arts Prize, joined by our panel of judges, Tabish Khan, Anna McNay and Ali Hilman, and our wonderful sponsors Be Smart About Art, Great Art UK and the EMA Arts Club....

This is the second year we have run the Summer Arts Prize at Lacey Contemporary Gallery, and this year we were proud to have had over 1000 individual works entered into the online stage of the prize, with just the top 46 chosen to exhibit in the gallery for the Finalist Exhibition. After the incredibly difficult task of choosing our finalist works for the exhibition, the judging panel was faced with the even bigger challenge of deciding on our winners!

The standard was set extremely high with works of all mediums and styles - from Jacob Chandler's corten steel life-size sculpture "Poise and Tension III", to Hanna ten Doornkaat's beautifully delicate little acrylic and pencil on wood "Nichi Nichi 06".

Tatawa's mixed media piece "Ball Game with Dog" contrasted with Jessye Curtis' Film "36 Dramatic Situations", along with many other weirdly wonderful or stunningly beautiful, sculptures, photographs, paintings, prints and drawings.

Whether you are an artist, a collector, or simply a fan of contemporary art, this exhibition has something that everyone will enjoy - each piece with it's own story, technical strength, and unique style.

We would like to congratulate our winners of the prize announced at the Private View on Wednesday 3rd August:
FIRST PLACE AWARD:
Andreea Ionascu, Untitled II,
Porcelain on Canvas, 155x123cm
Winning Artist Andreea Ionascu accepting the award from gallery Director Andrew Lacey.

“Andreea Ionascu’s work is ambitious both in terms of idea and execution, but its low-key colouring and reasonably flattened surface prevent it from being bombastic. It is a successful illustration of concept and practical skill coming together with great aesthetic impact and is exemplary of what an award like this should seek to encourage.” - Anna McNay
