Boonton UMC

August 7, 2022
9th Sunday after Pentecost

In-Person and on YouTube
Boonton UMC: A fun, musical, relevant, relational, and compassionate church
where people find hope, healing, and wholeness.
Did you ever play hide-and-go-seek growing up? Many times, when we played this game, we hid from others, and the goal was not to be found. But do you ever feel like God is hiding? Not coming out or responding when you pray or call out, "olly olly oxen free?"

Although some may wonder if God is hidden or veiled in some way, there is a powerful truth about being hidden, but it's not about God, it's about us: we are hidden in God through Christ. And the implications of this truth is one that gives us unbelievable gratitude and praise each and every time we approach the communion table.

"Olly olly oxen free" is a phrase we say during hide-and-go-seek that ends the game. It means, "All out in the free" or "We're all free." All the players of the game come out of their hiding when this is shouted. And that's what God did for us. God freed us from our hiding places. And instead of feeling we need to hide from God for fear of our sin or not feeling worthy enough, God now hides us in Christ. And because we are hidden in Christ, God no longer sees our sin, but sees Christ who covers our sin.

The name Zephaniah, the next minor prophet on our baseball team, means “The LORD hides” or “the LORD treasures.” We hope you know that you are hidden in God as a precious and beloved treasure, who is covered by Christ. And we pray our partaking in communion together will help you enter into that truth all the more this Sunday.

And whether in-person or on YouTube, we hope you can join us at 11:15am Sunday at Boonton UMC as we continue our summer sermon series!

In "Love Story," Nichole Nordeman takes us inside some of the pivotal moments of the people of Scripture, revealing a very human side that we have rarely glimpsed. She offers startlingly frank glimpses of her own struggles and faith journey, inspiring us to take the hand of the One who walks with us, who has always walked with us, from beginning to end.

A New Hotline Number to Be Mindful of and to Share with Others
As of July 16, 2022, the U.S. has transitioned to using the 988-dialing code, and it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to strengthen and expand the existing Lifeline. 988 is more than just an easy-to-remember number—it’s a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress – whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. In 2020, Congress designated the new 988 dialing code to operate through the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s (1-800-273-8255) network of over 200 locally operated and funded crisis centers across the country. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support. The 988 dialing code is just a first step toward strengthening and transforming crisis care in this country. It serves as a universal entry point so that no matter where you live, you can reach a trained crisis counselor who can help. Over time, the vision for 988 is to have additional crisis services available in communities across the nation, much the way emergency medical services work. Click Here to Read More.
