What a year – and it’s only February!

As if our Australian summer couldn’t be more stressful after recent devastating fires and floods, there’s a new deadly flu to contend with.  If you’re finding information about this coronavirus confusing or are concerned about your susceptibility, I’ve blogged an overview and some tips on prevention. Regardless of the statistics changing daily, these strategies remain invaluable.

February is often a time when we look for ways to treat our bodies more kindly after the of the festive season excesses. It’s no accident that FebFast has taken off in recent years. Consuming less booze or sugar, for the shortest month of the year is a great option. If you’re FebFasting or just looking for a healthier alternative to cool off on hot days, give switchel a go. I’ve tweaked the recipe for this ginger-vinegar syrup so it’s heavy on the ginger (and wonderful for your gut) but light on the sweeteners. You only need a dash of the concentrate in sparkling water to create a refreshing drink or celebratory ‘bubbles’. There’re also more alcohol-free drinks in the archive. 

It might sound a bit strange to celebrate cancer, but on February 4 I did just that. It was an honour to be invited to participate in World Cancer Day events in Sydney, as a survivor and consumer. It was a really fun day, with inspiring speeches from a diverse range of scientists and clinicians, and I even got to climb the harbour bridge with some of them! 
When I Initially got involved in cancer advocacy, I was a little worried that being a naturopath would deter some researchers. However it’s been the opposite. Having a science background and familiarity with medical research is a bonus. I’m treated with respect as a survivor and a fellow health professional. 
Spending time in the conventional medicine world has also deepened my passion about the way natural therapies can help people recover from chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. This is a gap naturopaths can skilfully fill, using lifestyle tools and remedies to help build our client’s physical and emotional resilience.
