Pearl and Joe Montgomery Ministerial Subsidy Fund Draws to a Close

In 1986 the Pearl and Joe Montgomery Ministerial Subsidy Fund was created to subsidize salaries of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) ministers in small-town CCSW congregations, mostly in West Texas and New Mexico, but was ultimately available to congregations throughout the region. The purpose of this fund was to provide an opportunity for ministers, early in their careers, to develop preaching skills as well as their pastoral responsibilities in small churches without the usual financial sacrifice.

Pearl and Joe Montgomery were homesteaders in Pecos County, Texas, in the early 1900s and participants in the Fort Stockton Christian Church. Pearl had said that the Fort Stockton Church trained many a “budding” preacher. The young newlywed preachers would accept the small salary, which was supplemented by meat and milk from ranches, produce and chicken from the farms. But when their family increased, they were forced to take another job, or move to another location. Pearl felt that these “first-church” preachers, if they could stay for at least three years, gained experience in preaching by learning the spiritual needs of the congregation and experiencing all the situations of a “pastorage” from pre-birth, adolescence, adult, to post-death, and thus developing their inner strength and preaching abilities. Hence, the Pearl and Joe Montgomery Ministerial Subsidy Fund was set up by their family in their memory. (from The History of the Pearl and Joe Montgomery Subsidy Fund)

When the final grant is made in 2018, a total of almost $1,116,000 will have been distributed in ministerial subsidies, all originating from a gift of only $341,000.

The Grant Selection Committee has recently awarded the final grants to the seven congregations that were receiving funds at the early in 2016, thus closing the window for application for new grant applications. No new applications can be accepted. For more than 30 years, this grant has supported small congregations and their pastors. The region is most appreciative of the ministries shared with church members and with their communities. Congregations are the lifeblood of the Disciples of Christ witness and mission in our region!

We give thanks to God for the faithfulness of Pearl and Joe Montgomery and of the many congregations and pastors who have served The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) well, these many years.

Southwest Regional Assembly - October 29-30, 2016

The Southwest Regional Assembly will be held this Fall on Saturday and Sunday, October 29-30, at Northway Christian Church in Dallas. Men's and Women's luncheons are still in the planning stages but are scheduled at 11 am on Saturday, with the Assembly beginning with a Mission First! Conversation on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm. Workshops will be held both afternoons, and the Assembly will conclude with the business meeting and final words at 3 pm on Sunday afternoon. A pre-assembly fellowship on Friday evening is scheduled at Midway Hills Christian Church on behalf of Texas Impact with the Young Clergy group holding a deep theological discussion afterward at the Flying Saucer Restaurant nearby. Keynote speaker Wil Gafney, Associate Professor of Old Testament at Brite, will speak at Saturday evening's worship.

The Mission First session on Saturday will require leaders for each discussion group; if you are willing to assist with this (training provided via conference call before the Assembly), contact the Regional Office at or 817-926-4687 with your name and contact information.

Workshops are in formation, and additional suggestions are still being accepted. If you'd like to provide input, contact the North Texas Area office at or 972-272-2900 with ideas for topics, leaders or how you'd like to help with the remaining Assembly task planning.

Churches may like to feature their musical entertainers during Saturday supper or Sunday lunch as there will be up to three hours total to share the variety of talent in our Region; email Larry Ross at or call 972-272-2900 to volunteer or for more information.

More details and registration options will be provided in the coming weeks and months, but include this weekend on your calendar as an event to attend so that your congregation can take part in this biennial gathering of the Southwest Region.
