“On a morning like this, joy is a sky filled with birds. It is the sound of laughter, of wind ruffling a patchwork wing.”
Horizon, Book 3 of the Bone Universe
out 9-26-17

You all, TWO WEEKS until HORIZON comes out and I have a lot of news to share... and invitations, and prizes. (yes prizes)

I'm so excited. It's been an amazing road to the completion of this trilogy and I cannot wait to share it with you. So this newsletter has a lot of links to ways in which we can share some of the celebration, and then a bunch of photos from the past couple of months. Ready?

Here are three big ones:

LAUNCH PARTY: Barnes & Noble Rittenhouse Square 9/26 7pm, with author Chuck Wendig! RSVP now! (those of you who remember what happened with the chuck wendig cupcakes last time, brace your eyeballs.)

My tour schedule so far:

And especially for you SoCal friends: this ticketed Taco event in San Diego with Kevin Hearne on 10/15 - there are a few tickets left but they're going fast!

Meantime, the preorder bookplates are in (and there's a clue down below).
To get yours mailed to you - tell me: How to personalize it, and where you want it sent (mailing addresses please!) and attach your preorder receipt.  Send all this to  by 9/26!

PLUS next week, I'll be announcing a celebratory raffle contest with four amazing prizes from me to a couple of lucky yous (with a little help from Bone Universe artist Tommy Arnold) - keep an eye out... muahahah.

More links follow. Scroll down, friends!

Also, Liz Bourke's written an amazing look at setting and character in The Bone Universe over at

About Wilde Type: I've decided to simplify a little bit, letting newsletter subscribers know where I'm going to be, what's coming up soon, giving sneak peeks at new work and early notice of treats and surprises, as well as outright sharing of same with you at random. I'll also keep you posted on great upcoming books I've read, random things I like, and possibly some research tidbits.

Meantime, photos & morning poems will continue to appear on Instagram, various enthusiasms on twitter and occasional tumblrs, and book bites, cooking the books, and longer reading lists and rainshouting will go on the blog.

Sound good?  Excellent! So glad you're traveling with me.
A couple photos from the Hugos and SF Bokhandeln, Stockholm! Ten Books I'm Excited About:
September Best of Lists That List Horizon
I have a new story up at Uncanny Magazine, called "Clearly Lettered in a Mostly Steady Hand" - it's a very different kind of story for me and I hope you like it! The audio recording by Amal El-Mohtar is amazing. The whole issue is amazing.

My short story from Shimmer Magazine, "Only Their Shining Beauty Was Left" is a finalist for the WSFA Small Press Award, to be given at Capclave in October - click here for the full list of finalists!

My short story "Bent the Wing, Dark the Cloud" - set in the same world as Updraft, Cloudbound, and Horizon is the BCS Audio Vault Pick this month - go have a listen.
Things You Can Do to Help Launch Horizon and all the books you love:

  • ... or request at Your Local Library
  • Review and share your faves with others
  • Come out to events! (we'd love to see you!)
  • Tweet, post, send carrier pigeons talking about what you love
(Thank you! Love, Your Authors)
Below: a hint at the bookplate for Horizon...
We started with my own sketches done while I was writing the book. We're ending with artist Tommy Arnold's sketches for the wingsets and I couldn't be more pleased.
if you preordered (or plan to), keep those receipts handy and stand by for instructions...
