ASEM Webinar Series on Entrepreneurship: Starting an App Company while Working 9-5
Part 2 of 3: Market Research & Product Development
By Prashant Kankaria

Abstract:
Going from saying “Ah! I had that same idea years ago, I wish I had done something about it!?!?” to saying “I have raised my first round of Angel funding!”. Learn to generate ideas,  research and formulate a vision. The startup world is mystified and over personified. The working class perceives entrepreneurs to be some kind of super humans risking it all and winning against the odds. While it is true that running a business requires a lot of hard work, patience and perseverance along with luck but starting an App business does not require quitting a 9-5 job. Well the truth is, unlike a decade ago, it has become very easy for anyone with an idea to start a business. The biggest challenge today to start a business is not the appetite to risk it “all”, but the willingness to start in the right direction.

ASEM Welcomes Chinese Academy of Engineering to Explore Joint Activities

Delegates of the Engineering Management Division of the Chinese Academy of Engineering me the ASEM Board of Directors at the Spring meeting in Indianapolis this February.  The two groups are exploring opportunities to promote engineering management in China by collaborating with publications, conferences, and other activities.

The delegation was led by Dr. Jishan He, Member of Fifth Governing Board of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor of Central South University, and Editor-in-Chief of and member of the Editorial Board of CAE’s Frontiers of Engineering Management.  Mr. Wenrui Hu, professor-engineer at the Advisory Center of China National Petroleum Corporation and Co-Chairman of the Division of Engineering Management of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, served as the co-head of the delegation.  Other members were Mr. Shaoxiong Zhang, professor of Central South University, Ms. Weng Jingbo, associate professor of Central South University, and Mr. Jingwei Bao, senior engineer at the Advisory Center of China National Petroleum Corporation.  All of the delegates are also leading organizers of the International Engineering Management Summit Forum and China Engineering Management Forum 2015 to be held in Guangzhou this May.

The delegation also visited the engineering management programs at St. Cloud State University, Missouri S&T, and Old Dominion University.

The representatives of the Chinese Academy of Engineering’s Engineering Management Division and members of the ASEM Board of Directors pose for a joint picture.  The two groups met for several hours and discussed opportunities for collaboration.  The CAE EMD is a highly select group of Chinese engineers with interests in large scale projects, developing manufacturing methods, and management.  The group is represented by 49 members, selected based on a strong reputation within their field. There are over 200,000 students studying engineering management in China.   Missing from the photo is ASEM President Gene Dixon.
The CAE EMD presented hand painted scrolls to each of the ASEM representatives attending the meeting.  Here Ben Baliga, Past-President of ASEM receives a scroll from Dr. Jishan He and Wen-rui Hu.  The scroll were created by a noted Chinese artist.  This scroll reflects Ben’s love for teaching.
The CAE EMD also recognized ASEM’s International Director, Simon Philbin with a scroll presented by Dr. Jishan He and Wen-rui Hu.  The scroll is really a reminder for Simon and ASEM to continue our work as the voice of engineering management across the world.
The CAE EMD representatives stand with Dr. Gene Dixon, President of ASEM.  US and International authors in the field of engineering management are invited to submit articles to the Frontiers of  Engineering Management, the CAE versions of ASEM Engineering Management Journal.  They also seek associate editors with areas of expertise as well as reviewers.
