Dear Friends,

Happy Spring to you from West End Residences! Thank you for your support of West End in our mission to provide housing and services to NYC's most vulnerable and underserved populations. To date, we have provided transitional and permanent housing together with comprehensive services to over 3,000 youths, families and single, older adults. Your generosity has made our work possible.

It is an important time of growth for West End. This past fall, we opened True Colors Bronx, which houses an additional 30 young adults. With your help, we will reach our goal of developing True Colors supportive housing in every NYC borough.

As we look to the months ahead, we encourage your continued support. This Spring, we continue to lean on your generosity in light of our organizational growth and the needs of our residents. We extend our sincerest thanks, and look forward to your involvement in the months ahead.

    Sincerely,

We are so proud of Oumou, our former resident, who was a guest on the Rachel Ray Show, which featured a segment on Hot Bread Kitchen!

“When I came to West End Intergenerational Residence, I didn’t have anything. I was pregnant. I am African. I didn’t have papers. Now I have an apartment. I got my diploma. I completed parenting class. I did a training to become a chef. Now I am working on 14th street full time with benefits. All the opportunities I got, I got from the Women’s Empowerment Program. West End opened the door for my life.”

CSH Releases Report:

Non-Time-Limited Youth Supportive Housing

There remains the misguided notion that the solution is short-term or transitional housing, and that youth, by virtue of their age, need less time to recover from the trauma of homelessness. West End Residences encourages the non time-limited approach as an answer to ending the cycle of homelessness. We believe the development of independent living skills is an organic process unique to each individual tenant and that arbitrary age and programmatic time frames do not define an individual needs or abilities, especially for those who are severely traumatized by homelessness, family rejection, and loss of support.

West End Residences recently partnered with the University of Maryland Alternative Breaks program to bring an instructional cooking workshop to the residents of West End's True Colors Bronx. Enrichment programming such as this works to impart the basic life skills our residents need to remain self-sufficient.

West End Residences encourages community involvement through corporate and small business sponsorships.
