EFPT Newsletter Summer 2017
Message from the president
“The most beautiful days, we haven’t seen them yet.”
Nazim Hikmet, 1945

Dear colleagues, dear friends,

I hope you all had, or are continuing your relaxing summer vacations and are getting ready for a fresh start to the new academic year. I am very pleased to share my message with you for one last time through this post-Forum EFPT Newsletter. For those of you who participated at the Forum, I hope memories from it will bring you warmth (of both the company and the weather!) and motivation for your work in the upcoming months of the year.

It has been a great honour and a maturing experience for me to serve as the president to EFPT, the first independent association of post-graudate medical trainees. On top of that, it has been an unforgettable pleasure to host the 25th annual meeting of psychiatric trainees in Europe, for a second time in Istanbul, twelve years after the first. Five days of hard work and preparation for EFPT’s future, five days of professional networking, five days of fun – on the banks of the beautiful Bhosphorus.

Present were not only EFPT member country representatives, but also local psychiatric trainees, medical and clinical psychology students. In total were over one hundred participants from thirty-five countries, who created a unique and fascinating atmosphere.

Without the admirable dedication and persistence of the Istanbul Forum’s Local Organizing Committee this would not have been possible. The outcome, from our side, is quite clear: Despite all the challenges, the effort was worth it.

We are grateful to the Psychiatric Association of Turkey for their unconditional support and belief in us. Moreover, we appreciate the contribution to the Forum program of the Turkish Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Turkish-German Association for Psychiatry, the Psychotherapy and Psychosocial Health, the Art Psychotherapies Association of Turkey, the EPA ECPC, the UEMS Sections of Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, ECNP and the Association for the Improvement of Mental Health Programmes.

I’d like to congratulate the promising participants of the EFPT Professional Skills and Leadership Course – no doubt we will be hearing more about their achievements soon. We were delighted by the presentations of two award-winning country posters: Latvia and Poland! And our colleague Gumru Ahmadova from Azerbaijan received a well-deserved Best Junior Scientist Oral Presentation Award, illustrating the potential of mental health services in her country. Last but not the least, my sincere congratulations to the Trainee Committee of the Psychiatric Association of Turkey, for receiving the EFPT Excellence Award 2017 with the Trainee Guidebook project- which allowed me to enjoy the deep privilege of presenting the award in my home country.

With greater enthusiasm and excitement, EFPT will continue pursuing its goals with stronger partnerships and active representation of psychiatric trainees in different platforms. We now have a broader community with 4 new member associations under the Federation's umbrella: I’d like to welcome the psychiatric trainee associations of Azerbaijan, Belgium (French-speaking part), Czech Republic, and FYR of Macedonia!

Finally, we are setting off for a new term, this time thinking differently about the mind and brain. Now it is even more relevant for me to repeat the quote above, of one of the greatest poets of 20th century: I look forward to cherishing our growing success next year in Bristol!

Keep up the good work!

Web site trouble

As you may have already seen, we have been having some trouble with our website. You may be redirected to another website or to "popup" spam material. Our IT Secretary David (read more below) is working to resolve these problems. While this is annoying, we have no indication that it is a threat to those who visit the website. Please be aware that some of the links in this newsletter that link to our website may be affected by these issues. You may then click the link again. This is also the reason why the summer edition of the newsletter is somewhat delayed.
