Police Warn of Mailbox Fishing Scam
Deputy Inspector Mark Iocco, the new Commanding Officer of Midtown North Precinct, informed us at a recent Council Meeting that there has been a spate of mailbox fishing going on in our neighborhood.
Thieves are stealing letters from the mailboxes at various street corners, using rat glue traps and other devices. The aim is to find some checks, wash the ink off them, and then cash them with fake names and large dollar amounts.
The best way to avoid such fishing scams is to post letters with checks inside the post office. Or if you must use a mailbox, mail your letters before 2 PM so that they get picked up that day.
Please do not leave your mail in mailboxes overnight or over the weekend. That is when it is the most vulnerable.
The NYPD is working to catch these criminals, but until they do please be vigilant.
