July 4 Block Party is Tomorrow!

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal are both slated to drop by.

10 AM. We Close the Street. Four people have signed up to help set up. We could use two or three more to help place barricades, hang signs, plant flags, fill wading pools and carry tables out to the block. Meet at 10 AM at West 55th and Eighth.

11:30 AM. Start the Grill. We need someone with charcoal grilling experience to get our 5-foot long grill started. And we always need grill chefs.

12 NOON to 4 PM. BLOCK PARTY!! Talk with neighbors, make new friends, splash in a wading pool, get your face painted, eat a hot dog, create a masterpiece in chalk. Remember to bring your own food and some to share.

4 PM to 5 PM. Clean Up. Two folks have signed up to help clean up and would no doubt appreciate help from a few more hands. Tables and chairs have to go back to the proper basements, recycling and trash have to be collected, the grill needs cleaning and when all is cleared, the block must be opened again to traffic--at least until next year.

July 22 Meeting to Learn About Building Proposed for 806 Ninth Avenue

On Monday, July 22, the West 55th Street Block Association will host a meeting from 7 pm to 9 pm for folks who want to learn more about the proposed new building at 806 Ninth Avenue (W54th and Ninth), currently the site of a parking lot. We'll meet in the Social Room of 340 West 55.

Special guest Joe Restuccia from Community Board 4 will be there to give some history about the project, which CB4 approved 10 years ago, to provide more affordable housing in the neighborhood, as well as to talk about the changes that NYC's department of Housing Preservation and Development wants to make to the project. There is talk about adding supportive housing (for formerly homeless folks) or even making it 100% supportive housing.

If you have an opinion on the subject, now is the time to make your voice heard. Or if you just want to find out more about the impact this proposed change might have, come to the meeting on July 22 from 7 pm to 9 pm in the Social Room of 340 West 55th.
