Just 8 Days to July 4 Block Party!

We've rented a 5-foot long charcoal grill. The wading pools have arrived and the face paints are coming. Time for the annual July 4 Block Party in which West 55th Street will be closed to traffic for most of the day.

There are still a few details to finalize:

GRILL Chefs: If you can flip a burger or scorch a hot dog on July 4, please shoot Christine an email at

SET UP and CLEAN UP Crews: We need six or seven people to volunteer to set up tables and trash cans and fill pools at 10 am on July 4. Then we need a similar number to start cleaning up at around 4 pm.

High School Juniors Receive Travel Grant Awards

The West 55th Street Block Association gave $500 travel grants to three outstanding juniors at the High School for Environmental Studies on West 56th Street this spring. The grants allow qualifying students a chance to visit some of the colleges outside the five boroughs to which they are thinking of applying. This is the tenth year we have given these grants!

Applicants complete an essay and a budget outlining how they would use the grant. Winners are chosen by a committee, which this year comprised Claire O, Lisa P., Susan M and Christine G.

Pictured above (left to right) are Christine Gorman, winners Gabriel Matos, Gabriella Fernando and Ariana C. Colon and principal Amber Najmi-Shadid.

Gabriel is interested in studying law and will visit colleges in Washington, D.C. Gabriella, who has been named a Questbridge Prep Scholar, is interested in computer science, law and public health and will visit colleges in either Washington, D.C., Chicago or Houston. Ariana would like to study marine biology and plans to visit a couple of schools in Florida.

The good folks at the HK Democratic Club are inviting friends and neighbors to a debate watch party at Gossip Bar, West 50th and Ninth Avenue this Wednesday and Thursday evenings, starting at 8 PM, for the first two debates between Democratic candidates. See details below.
Do You Know This Woman?
She has been photographed taking plants out of the tree beds on West 47th Street. Residents are fed up and have started posting signs of her, captured from security cameras, around the neighborhood.
