Donate Now for 39th Annual Tree Lighting!!

Have you noticed the chill in the air and the leaves starting to turn? Fall is in full swing, which means that the holiday lights will soon be gracing many of the trees on our block. The Sav-A-Tree crew is scheduled to start on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018 (the week AFTER Thanksgiving). This will be the 39th year in a row that we've had lights in the trees on our block. People come from all over the city to see them and they definitely cheer our spirits on the long, cold nights of winter! You can help make this festive tradition a reality again this year by making a tax-deductible donation to the West 55th Street Block Association.

There are two ways to contribute:

1) You can donate online via PayPal or credit card by going to our website: west55ba.org and clicking on the yellow "Donate" button in the lower left hand corner.

2) Or you can make out a check payable to "The West Street Block Association" and drop it off with one of the doormen at 345 West 55th Street (attention Christine Gorman). Please note the change from last year. Our treasurer, Jack Herlihy, and his wife Susan, retired this summer and moved to Florida! See donation form below.

As usual, this is our biggest expense for the year. We need to raise $9,500 to hang the lights and another $2,800 to take them down in February of 2019. New York City does not allow us to leave the lights up all year as that hurts the trees. And Sav-A-Tree has consistently given us the best bid and done an incredible job each year since we started using them in 2008.

The rest of our projects--from spring planting to travel scholarships for students at the High School for Environmental Studies--total between $3000 and $4000. The average donation is $50, but we've had donations as high as $1500 (from some of the co-ops and businesses).

We've raised enough to cover these expenses for ten years in a row, so this is completely do-able. We will try to get a few donation forms (below) printed up to leave in lobbies, but if you have access to a copier machine and can print up some to leave in your lobby, that would also be great.

Also, calling all dogs and their human companions! Don't forget to come out for our Howling Halloween Costume Contest on Oct. 24 at 7 pm. Thanks, Jen and Mitch, for organizing.

Mark your calendars: the Fall Block Association Meeting will be on Monday, Oct. 29 from 7 to 8 pm. Special guest: Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal (see calendar below for locations) --Christine

Nov. 6 -- (Tuesday) Election Day! Polls open from 6 AM to 9 PM. In addition to races for Attorney General and Governor, there will be three important proposals on the back side of the ballot, so be sure to turn it over! These proposals came up kind of at the last minute as part of the City Charter revision process.

Proposal #1 decreases the amount of money that candidates can receive for individual donations.

Proposal #3 places term limits of eight years (total) on the volunteer (unpaid) members of the various Community Boards (all 2,950 of them).

Proposal #2 gives the Mayor greater influence over the Community Boards, by making the Mayor's office primarily responsible for supporting the community boards with urban planning material and the like instead of the current practice of having the borough presidents provide most of the support.

Obviously, Mayor DiBlasio is in favor of all three proposals since his office drew them up. And a transportation alternatives blog argued in favor of proposal #3 as a roundabout way of reducing the number of cars in the city.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, however, is on record as being against proposals #2 and #3 because she says they will make it easier for real estate developers to steamroll untested community boards into changing zoning plans for their megaprojects.
