News in brief

  • Welcome meeting for international mobility students
At the start of each semester, the International Center welcomes the international mobility students who come to study or carry out internships at the URV’s various faculties and schools.
This semester a total of 4 meetings have been held on the URV’s Sescelades and Catalunya Campuses and have been attended by over 150 of the 200 mobility students that the URV will receive for this second semester.
In addition to explaining the administrative procedures that the students have to complete, the meetings are also an opportunity to provide them with their URV cards and folders, their usernames and passwords for the URV’s online services and information about Tarragona and Reus, and to resolve any questions or problems that they may have regarding the university and its surroundings. Apart from being informative, the welcome meetings also enable newly arrived students to get to know each other and to share their experiences with each other.

This year's conference focused on the student experience as it is incorporated into their overall academic experience, personal growth and career development.
The conference consisted of sessions, workshops and plenaries about topics such as the re-entry of study-abroad students and how to deal with political changes as an international student. It is dedicated to fostering and promoting the international dimension of Armenian Higher Education (HE) through the development of a national and institutional policy framework and tools. The second is WELCOME and is coordinated by the Technical University of Catalonia (Spain). It is intended to enhance the international dimension of Kazakh and Chinese higher education institutions by defining and implementing strategic and marketing methodologies to facilitate and increase the numbers of incoming foreign students, professors and researchers. The third is ROAD and is coordinated by the Instituto Superior Técnico of Lisboa (Portugal). Its goal is to develop a retraining system in strategic management competencies for high level civil servants in Uzbekistan to ensure a strong, modern and efficient civil service.
The kick-off meetings for these 3 projects were held in February and March.

Dear colleagues and friends,

Soon we will break up for a very well deserved Easter holiday.

The first three months of the year have gone by very fast and were full of international activities: we have received several visits from partners, some of our students went to Bali to a Student Seminar that they enjoyed tremendously, we have received our good partners from Hiroshima University for their yearly study abroad programme at the URV and I have attended one of the leading international conferences in international higher education, the APAIE in Taiwan, where we were able to identify more promising international prospects.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that on 23 February the University Senate agreed to offer bachelor degrees to international students from outside the EU. This is yet another step in the right direction for making our university even more international.

Another important development at the beginning of the year has been the mobility process, which for the first time was conducted entirely through the MoveOn platform. All students wishing to go on mobility next year have had to submit their applications via the platform and all the URV’s mobility coordinators have done an excellent job of adapting to the new system and processing the applications. I would like to thank them all for their invaluable efforts! Thanks to their hard work, 450 URV students will be having an unforgettable experience abroad during the 2017-18 academic year.

A very important information session for all these students was held on 30 March at the URV’s Catalunya Campus and retransmitted live to every faculty in the University. A recording of the session is also available online. I would also like to mention here the herculean efforts of the International Center during this complex process. We all work together for the benefit of our students’ international experiences.

Another new development is that this year all outgoing students will be trained in intercultural communication before they go abroad. The training is provided by the Language Service and will help them to be better prepared for their semester or year abroad.

In other news, the International Center provided a session for the new mobility coordinators from the Faculty of Education Sciences and Psychology. They attended an intensive session at the I-Center where they received information on all the international processes carried out there and were able to get answers to all their questions. This has led to the creation of the “Get to know the I-Center” sessions, which will be open to anyone at the URV. You will all receive more information on this very soon.
Finally, I would like to thank you for signing up to receive the International Newsletter. We are happy with the large number of subscribers who have signed up, but there may still be many people who are not aware of this change to the international newsletter.

We would appreciate if you could tell your colleagues about it and invite them to sign up as well, so that as many people as possible can keep up with our university’s international activities.

Have a great Easter break!
