News in brief

The first call of the URV mobility programme I-Networks comes to an end with a participation of 14 students, 6 academic staff and 2 administrative staff. I-Networks is a mobility programme to promote and enhance the participation of the university community in the events organized by the networks in which the URV takes part. The resolution of this call was published on April 26 while the second call is already open for participation.

The International Center has led the submission of a project proposal to Key Action 2 – Strategic Partnerships of the European Commission, published by the Spanish Agency SEPIE. The object of the proposal is to implement the SUCTI project, which aims at raising awareness and shift the internal culture of our institutions towards internationalisation, thus creating a systemic change in our institutions and in European Higher Education.

I’moving, a video contest promoted by the URV International Center, was launched last March. All along the month of April outgoing students of the academic year 2015/16 could send their international experiences told directly by the protagonists. The winner will be awarded 500€. Soon the same contest will be open for incoming students.

Laura Aragonés, student of Audiovisual Communication at the URV who has carried out an Erasmus+ mobility in Lyon, participated in the television programme Europe Blog (TV3, the Catalan public television channel) as a reporter.

  • The International Center received with sadness the news of the terrible attacks that took place in Brussels on 22 March. The IC staff immediately contacted our exchange students in Belgium (both incoming and outgoing) to ascertain their wellbeing and to ensure that they received all necessary assistance. The International Center is the contact point for information and assistance in all cases where mobility students find themselves in a conflict situation. Students can contact us at
Our hearts are with the victims and their families and we sincerely hope for a swift end to this violence.

Dear colleagues,

Here we are again! Once more, the International Newsletter is out with an outline of some of the outstanding international events that we have had at the URV in the last two months. And this time we are using a new format that follows the design of the regular URV news bulletin.

But before starting with the overview, my thoughts go to the victims of the Freginals accident. They were all UB Erasmus students who had spent some hours enjoying the Fallas of Valencia. Our deepest thoughts to their families.

At the end of February, the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica invited me to visit them. Their interest in our Faculty of Business and Economics, our doctoral and master’s programmes and our postgraduate courses (FURV) has paved the way for future agreements on mutual collaboration.

On 8 April 2016, the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution (IPHES) was visited by His Excellency the Consul of the Kingdom of Morocco, Mr Abdelaziz Jatim, accompanied by myself and the head of the International Center. During his visit, he learned about the close collaboration between IPHES and the University of Oujda in Morocco and was given a guided tour of the Institute. He then was received by the Rector of the URV. The URV and Morocco have already enjoyed close links for a long time, but these will become even closer thanks to the ties established with the Moroccan Consulate in our city.

In March, Professor Hajime (Hiroshima University) enjoyed a highly fruitful visit to mark the two courses attended by Hiroshima University students at the URV on nursing and on human rights. The close links between our two institutions over the last four years have led to short courses in human rights and, more recently, the nursing seminar. This study abroad experience is highly valued by the Japanese students and URV students also benefit from the intercultural experiences that their visit brings with it. Professor Hajime was received by the URV’s Rector and myself so that we could discuss ways to continue and further strengthen our cooperation.

And to conclude this summary of the visits that have taken place in the last two months, I must mention the visit to the Faculty of Tourism on 25 April of Dr José Domingo Alarcón, dean of the Universidad Surcolombiana, which has been a partner of the URV since 2011. We are very much looking forward to working closely with this university and with CORHUILA very soon.

For the immediate future, we have already lined up many other international visits and events, which I will be glad to tell you more about in the next issue of the Newsletter. Would you also like to share your events? Remember to send them to

I wish you the best for the remainder of the semester.
