Our Players Speak!

Here’s violinist Nicole Paglialonga, talking about her impressions of Latin America and the upcoming concert by the Cayambis Sinfonietta:

“Last spring, my husband and I had the pleasure of performing together in a festival in Medellin, Colombia. While he had already visited several times, this was my first experience of South America. The over- whelmingly genuine and inviting people, coupled with their fabulous musicianship will be a memory that I will truly cherish for the rest of my life. So the chance to dive into music from all over South America and get to know this amazing part of the world a little bit better was an exciting prospect, and I am honored to be a part of this new project!”

Our Kickstarter Video!

Produced by Virginia Tech cinema professor Charles Dye, in this video, John Walker and baritone Theodore Sipes discuss how best to sing the indigenous text used by Venezuelan composer Luis Pérez Valero in his piece, Eremuk, which will be premiered in Blacksburg on October 21. Also featured is clarinetist and VT professor Phillip Paglialonga, who was filmed working on several passages from Miguel Angel Santaella’s composition, SineModus, which also will be premiered next week.
Virginia Tech graduate teaching assistant María Elvira Vera Tatá is shown talking about the importance of this project to southwest Virginian audiences.

Ensemble Joins Artist Program

We are pleased to announce that the Ondas Ensemble has been added to company’s roster of international artists. Founded in Chicago in 2007, the ensemble’s mission has been to present new and historic works with ties to the Americas. Its goals are not only to present rarely heard gems but also to have their programs introduce the vast panorama of Latin American culture. As a Cayambis Music Press Artist, the Ondas Ensemble will be helping to develop a new repertoire of music for small ensembles by Latin American composers.

Our Composers in the News

Kent Holliday’s second piano sonata, Tzolkin, which is based on the Mayan calendar was performed on July 15 and 16 in the Galway City Museum by pianist Nicholas Ross of Otterbein University. The performance was accompanied by depictions of paintings by an Irish artist named Maurice.
Luis Ernesto Gómez and Luis Pérez Valero are currently in Caracas attending the eighteenth Latin American Music Festival. Pérez Valero’s work, In Memoriam Wladimir Zabaleta (soon to be published by our company) will be performed on October 17 in the Fedora Alemán Hall by the Simón Bolívar Contemporary Music Ensemble.
On November 1 Federico Núñez will premiere his work, 7 estudios para guitarra eléctrica con ebow, in the First Encounter of Contemporary Music at the DAMas-IUNA University in Buenos Aires. He also wrote to say that from the sixth through ninth of November he will be in Santiago, Chile, participating in the First International Guitar Festival. While there, he will be performing concerts, giving talks and presenting master classes.
