Our Telephone Support Volunteer Vicki calling carers
Our Telephone Support Service which reaches out to isolated carers who may find it difficult to attend the service in person.

This service started in September and is a pilot project offering emotional support on a regular basis over the phone and checks in with vulnerable carers giving them a chance to talk through their concerns and issues around their caring role.
We are calling carers during the day and one evening with a particular emphasis on Employed Carers, Carers over 80, Carers looking after more than one person, Carers who look after someone with Alzheimer’s /Dementia, Carers who are unwell, Former carers up to a year after their cared for has died, and Parent Carers, that we have identified from a cohort of our registered carers.
2 volunteers and myself are working on the project which if successful we are hoping to secure some longer term funding”.

"It has been well received by the carers" - Sally Willsher – Counselling Service Manager.

Carers Rights Day - 21st November ~ 1:00 - 3:00pm - Harland Centre
Carers Rights Day each year helps us:
•    ensure carers are aware of their rights
•    let carers know where to get help and support
•    raise awareness of the needs of carers.
Every day 6,000 people in the United Kingdom become carers, something few have been able to plan for. From the start, they may find themselves needing to talk to health and social care providers, juggle their paid employment with caring, apply for benefits or consider how to fund future care costs. All of this while they are coming to terms with their new caring responsibilities.

Southend Carers advice and information service is now available 24/7 our e-handbook is on the Southend Carers website;
https://www.southendcarers.co.uk/services-for-carers/carers-ehandbook/
This year Southend Carers are working in partnership with the Older Peoples Community Mental Health Team holding a Carers Café at the Harland Centre  on the 21st November 2019 1pm -3pm.

Falls Prevention - Southend Borough Council’s Staying Steady classes
Everyone falls once in a while, whatever their age. However, as we get older, our bodies change and falls can have greater consequences. Every year about a third of people aged over 65 slip, trip or fall over. Some of these falls results in broken bones and hospital admissions. A fall can also reduce your confidence and make you afraid of falling again.

The risk of falling increases with age and those who have already had a fall are more likely to fall again in the future. Slips, trips and falls can happen to anyone; however, falling is not a normal part of getting old.

The good news is that up to 30% of falls are preventable.
