Creating a safe work environment is critical to the success of your business, and is one of the best ways to retain staff and maximise productivity. Whilst it can be a costly expense to implement safe practices and install safety equipment, the effect of not taking action can be severe.

As a business owner you have responsibilities regarding health and safety in your workplace. You need to ensure that your business doesn't create health and safety problems for your employees, customers or the public.

Knowing and understanding the WHS laws, (also known as OH&S), will help you avoid unnecessary costs and damage to your business caused by workplace injury and illness. It will also provide your business with a strong foundation to achieve long-term success.

ENTREPRENEUR REVIEW - Matthew Faulkner, shares a little bit about himself and his business, proving that Accountants are NOT boring -

Business name -
Matthew Faulkner Accountancy (A Chartered Accounting Practice)

Website Matthew Faulkner Accountancy Pty Ltd

How did the business originate? I bought a couple of contracts off my employer big enough to call an 'opportunity'. These allowed me to leave, set up a company and try and add to them.

How long have you been in this business?  Since 4th December 2014 but in Chartered Accountancy the 6 years prior.

What do you love about your business? Seeing what people do for a living. Having a chat about what they have done during the year and what they want to achieve next year. There are so many talented people at various stages of achieving their goals. Its great to see them succeed and help them with the boring bits of their work.

Is there anything you dislike? Rule changes!

Favourite food: Icecream

Favourite item in your office: My 80s memorabilia office stationery - cassette tape sticky tape dispenser, rubix cube pen holder, vinyl record coasters.

Neil de Grasse Tyson (to discuss the stars), Paul Keating (to thank him), Chris Anderson (to discuss TED talks)

Who do you seek advice from? My wife whom is very insightful.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business? Start part time whilst employed. You'll know when its big enough to be able to quit your job.
What is your tip for a work/life balance? Make time for yourself, then you will work and play without wanting to get away.
Apple / AndroidDefinitely Apple

APP REVIEW -  Your emails should be leaving your business in a professional standard even if you only have a hotmail or gmail address. There are a number of web based platforms that offer FREE signature creations, making it easily accessible from any device's browser.
These sites will allow you to include all the relevant information for an email signature, including a disclaimer if necessary. You can also include links to all your social media accounts.

SMALL BIZ TIP - Time just seems to get away from us and often at the end of the day we know we have been busy but we just cant be certain that we got things done. When you are facing overwhelm a tip is to keep a timesheet for your self for a few days or a few weeks.
When you record the tasks you are completing every 15 minutes or 30 minutes you will have a great indication of whether you are being productive or just getting caught up in time sucking activities that will get you (and your business) no where.
