AUGUST IS - Tradies National Health Month Australia's hundreds of thousands of tradies may enjoy the outdoors, but it comes at a price with one in five of all serious workplace injuries involving tradies or labourers so it's clear that tradies need health, safety and well-being initiatives. The premise is helping tradies look after themselves physically & mentally, to keep active & be free from pain.

Hope you enjoy this issue of basically business

The Mission and Vision Statements are important guides in the running of your business.

Your vision statement is your inspiration but will also become the framework for all your strategic planning.

It needs to be memorable and easily communicated to staff and customers. It should state where you want your business to be in the future. It is important to recognise what the purpose of your business is and why you are in it. It states what you aspire to achieve so dream big and be dynamic.

Your mission statement is the ways in which your vision will be achieved. These form the foundation of who you are as a business, your marketing positioning and what you promise to your customers.

Your mission statement announces to the world why your company exists. It’s a combination of what you do and why you do it expressed in a way that outlines the values that are important to you.

ENTREPRENEUR REVIEW - Tom Ravelingien, shares a little more on Belgian beers and his business.

Business name - ElectroTechnics

Website ElectroTechnics

How did the business originate?  In Belgium, I had a number of challenging jobs, from project engineer designing machinery for textile industry, to main technician at Ghent University where I was responsible for designing experimental setups for PhD students. I made reactors for important oil companies, I maintained the safety sensors for a nuclear reactor, … I wanted to stay in the electrical/technology field and started with testing and tagging and I’m doing an apprenticeship to become a licensed electrician. I am also exploring other fields such as LED lights, CCTV and IT.

How long have you been in this business? 1 year now and I’m still learning every day. I’m working in a few different fields like testing and tagging, LED lights, CCTV and IT solutions. The electrical inspections are still the core of my business, but there is more and more demand for surveillance cameras. People don’t want to pay a monthly fee for their sound alarm and don’t use it any more. With CCTV people can see their home everywhere on their iPhone or smartphone.

What do you love about your business?  Meeting new people in different sectors and I have a passion for safety.

Is there anything you dislike? No!

Favourite food: Belgian fries with self-made mayonnaise and delicious home made stew

Favourite colour:  Cyan,  in Dutch it’s called ‘appelblauwzeegroen’ translated: appleblueseagreen

Favourite drink: Sint-Bernardus Abt 12, a dark-brown Belgian Beer brewed in Watou. It’s based on the same recipe of the famous West-Vleteren 12. My favourite Australian beer is the IPA from Macarthur Grange Brewery in Smeaton Grange.

Favourite movieBraveheart and Shaun The Sheep The Movie. I also like good thrillers like Seven and The Game

Favourite time of the day7pm, after dinner, watching some tele with the kids and afterwards the silence when they are in bed … :)

Favourite item in your officeMy iMac

Favourite app on your phone/tablet/computerAdobe Creative Cloud, Dreamweaver for my website, Photoshop for all the artwork

What book are you reading right now?  I’m not a book reader, I do read my overseas magazines from Zythos about the Belgian beers and I read a lot of articles on the internet about websites, SEO, … all things to improve business.

Which 3 people (dead or alive) would you invite to a dinner party? Why?  It’s more like 3 groups instead of 3 individuals I would like to invite:

Our close family, to show them how well we have it here in Australia (and they don’t have to worry about us)
My overseas friends as they love nice food and a couple of beers and
Our friends here in Australia as thank you for accepting us and supporting us

Name 3 things on your bucket list: To buy a motorcycle again, to papagliding at Stannie and learn to surf.

What do you like to do for yourself?  I love doing day trips with my family and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, that really charges my batteries.

Who do you seek advice from? My wife.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business? 1. Never wait till you are ready to start, there will always be something you can wait for. Start your business and improve, learn. 2. Fail, but fail fast! 3. Surround yourself with people smarter than you 4. Only deal with positive people

What is your tip for a work/life balance? I have found a good work/life balance since we moved to Australia. Every weekend is like a short holiday, enjoying the beach, bush & wildlife, … I think many Australians don’t realise they live in one of the best countries in the world.

Apple / AndroidApple

Beach / BushBoth, we love bush walking but also really enjoy a relaxing afternoon at the beach. The kids just love to play in the sand and water.

Tom can be contacted for your business testing and tagging requirements.

APP REVIEW -  My calendar has become my most used app on my smartphone recently and I don't know why it has taken me so long. I know a lot people just don't use it. Making appointments, blocking time to attend to specific tasks as well as the timely reminders are helpful in running a business (and a home)!

Most calendars have a sync option to a cloud based program so that you are working off the same calendar every time and everywhere. There are options available now to share your calendar with others - be it your family, office or clients.

Give it a try for a week and see how your productivity improves!
SMALL BIZ TIP - Some clients will stay with your business forever and some customers will only use your products or services once but every one of them can give you a testimonial. These can be a great source of feedback to improve your service and a great referral for new clients.

Most people dont know what to include in a testimonial so create it for them - ask direct questions to lead them in their replies.

Finally use the good ones on your website and social media platforms so that more people can see how fantastic you are.
