It's been over a year, and yet the crisis at our southern border continues.
As Christians, we are called by our faith, by Scripture, and by our Baptismal Covenant to care for those who are mistreated, for those who are homeless and without a defender, and for the most vulnerable. Right now, that surely includes the families separated at the American southern border.
Here is what you can do to help.
- Pray. It might seem cliché, but prayer works, especially when we otherwise feel powerless.
- Contact your members of Congress. Tell them you are concerned, and that their job depends on their ability to be concerned about your concerns.
- Contact one of the groups working at the border. The bishops of California have a good list here:
Locally, we have additional groups, like the Cornell Farmworks Program, Catholic Charities (which works extensively to advocate for the needs of the undocumented community in CNY), and the Ithaca Sanctuary Alliance.
- Attend a community gathering--nationwide gatherings are planned for July 12, including one here in Ithaca.
