On a more positive note, the UN Open Ended Working Group (OEWG), established by the United Nations General Assembly in December last year, will begin its operative sessions in February. The OEWG, open to all UN members and also to civil society, will discuss the legal measures and norms required to achieve a nuclear-weapon-free world. It will also discuss proposals to reduce and eliminate the risk of accidental, mistaken, unauthorized or intentional nuclear weapon detonations. See UN re-opens the door to a nuclear-weapon-free world.
This month also sees the 70th anniversary of the first resolution of the United Nations, which called for the elimination of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. Commemorative actions are being taken around the world. See Time to implement UN Resolution 1 (1)
