James Arthur Balfour, Foreign Secretary, 1917; what is Theresa May doing about his legacy?

Palestine Post

York Conference Edition, March 2017

Dear Members and Recipients,

Put this in your diary for York: a fringe meeting with Tom Brake and LDFP on 18th March, 6.15 pm, in Novotel-Meeting Room 5, York, on the subject of The Balfour Declaration (how Britain created Israel). Tom will be introducing the film Britain in Palestine 1917-1948, on behalf of the Balfour Project, of which he is a patron, and we shall have time for discussion.

The Balfour Declaration of 1917 is a crucial document for which Britain is responsible, and is having a major impact on the Middle-East today.

In this newsletter we include articles on the countdown to the centenary of the Balfour Declaration along with several reflecting on the current situation in Israel and Palestine. Throughout these articles we show how the Israeli leadership incites anti-Palestinian feeling among the Israeli population, giving the occupation ever more momentum.

LDFP held a meeting in Parliament on 14 March, where the Palestinian Ambassador, Manuel Hassassian, spoke to a group of invited peers and MPs, and there followed an informative discussion.

Lastly, don't miss the Channel 4 Report on Banksy’s latest work, the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem.

Countdown to the Centenary of the Balfour Declaration

We start by discussing the countdown to the centenary of the Balfour Declaration in November 2017, contrasting the Prime Minister’s self-satisfied and fawning statements about it with diverse voices calling on Britain to acknowledge its errors and even apologise. Click here for the full story.

Obama’s tardy support for the Palestinians gives way to Trump’s confusion

We discuss the transition from Obama to Trump, as they took opposite sides on Security Council Resolution No. 2334 condemning Israel for its conduct of the occupation, and the two faces of the British Government as it sought to mollify the Israeli reaction. Recent reports indicate that HMG has agreed that a British royal will visit Israel to mark the Balfour centenary, breaking with its avoidance of such visits since 1948. A green light for occupation – and annexation of the West Bank?

We show how Israel has taken Trump’s victory as a green light to pursue its illegal occupation more vigorously, ramping up the demolition of Palestinian homes and the authorisation of Jewish settlements on Palestinian land, in a way that presages the annexation of most of the West Bank. Click here for the full story.

Is this is the way Israel treats its own citizens?

We discuss the lamentable way Israel is treating its own Bedouin citizens in the Negev, and is thereby fomenting conflict. Click here for the full story.

A green light to impunity

Here we show how a light prison sentence for Elor Azaria reinforces the impunity of the Israeli defence forces, and here we add some further observations on the current situation in Israel and Palestine.

Further Israeli meddling in Britain’s affairs

In Newsletter No. 20 we showed Israel meddling in Britain’s internal affairs and compromising the integrity of aspects of our institutional life. In this issue we show Government arbitrarily interfering in free speech at the Universities in pursuit of a pro-Israeli agenda. However, staff and students are fighting back, as should all of us who cherish free speech, regardless of where we stand on Israel and Palestine. Click here for the full story.
