Weekly Spotlight

Find and Court Angel Investors

Bill Grimm, an executive in residence for entrepreneurship and negotiation at the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College, recently wrote an article on finding and courting angel investors for I4 Business.  We've republished the article on our website here.

Here are the highlights of Bill's thoughts on the subject:
Raising capital from angel investors is different and often more difficult than raising capital from angel groups. As Bill says; "the secret doesn’t lie in how you ask, it lies in how you build up to it — how you build the relationship, garner trust and convert them to serve as your evangelists."  His key recommendations: 1) View angels as customers.
Entrepreneurs typically view angels as “suppliers selling capital,” when they are in fact “customers buying equity.”  2) Do your homework.  Confidently explain why they should invest. 3) Build relationships. It’s risky to raise capital from complete strangers. Instead, build face-to-face rapport over multiple face-to-face meetings. 4) Expand your horizons.  Do not limit yourself to Central Florida. Follow relationships. 5) Learn how to close the deal. Get non-binding agreements first and then close on each angel.

I encourage every entrepreneur that is raising capital or those that are advising entrepreneurs how to raise capital to read Bill's article.
